Recalled books

A book on my account has been recalled but I still need it for awhile. Can I hold onto it? If not, why not?

The book still needs to be returned by the recall due date. Recalls are used by research libraries to provide equitable access to materials. Borrowers are assured use of materials for 14 days, but after two weeks have passed other borrowers can place recalls that shorten the original loan period. Books recalled for Course Reserve are rushed to serve course requirements; they are due immediately and do not receive a minimum 14 day loan period.

Your borrowing and renewing privileges will be temporarily suspended if this book is not returned by the recall due date. Overdue fines may also start to accrue on the recalled item. Once you have returned the item, you may place a recall on it and you will be notified when the item is again available for you to pick up at the Morris Library Circulation and Reserve Desk.

I didn’t get any notification about a recall on my account and now I’m blocked from borrowing. Why did this happen?

Borrowers are notified by email if an item on their account has been recalled. Borrowers without an email address in their record will be notified by U.S. mail. Notifications, whether in email or in print, can contain multiple recalls. It is not uncommon for borrowers to overlook a recall on a second or third book because they have not scrolled fully through the email notification. Your borrowing and renewing privileges will be temporarily suspended if a recalled book is not returned by the recall due date and overdue fines may also start to accrue. Once the recalled item has been returned your borrowing privileges will be restored.

I received a recall notice for a book on my account. I’m out of town and have the book with me and am willing to mail it back. Where should I send it?

You will be responsible for the item until it is checked in at the Morris Library Circulation and Reserve Desk.

Accessing e-journals and databases

I’m having trouble accessing any journal or database from off-campus. Why?

Due to licensing restrictions, access to the Library’s licensed electronic resources is limited to:

  • University of Delaware faculty and staff
  • University of Delaware students (including ELI)
  • Spouses of University of Delaware students, faculty, and staff
  • Retired University of Delaware faculty and staff
  • Osher Lifelong Learning Institute participants

If you are a member of one of these categories you should be able to enter your UDelNet ID and email password at the University’s proxy for access to these resources. If you are doing so and are not gaining access to the article then please submit a help request to the University’s IT Support Center to report that you are unable to access UD electronic resources from off-campus. I’m having trouble accessing one specific electronic journal. I’m able to access the other journals but not the one I need. Please help.

Overdue material, fines and lost items

I returned a book last week but it’s still showing up as checked out on my account. Why?

Please provide the title, author and call number of the book along with your name and ID number to Library Account Services via the AskCirc form or at libacct@winsor.lib.udel.edu. You may also call Library Account Services at (302) 831-2456. Office hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

I just received a bill for overdue fines. But I returned everything on time and shouldn’t have to pay this. Who can I talk to?

I lost a book that I had checked out. Can I replace it instead of paying the charge?

Please provide the title, author and call number of the book along with your name and ID number to Library Account Services via the AskCirc form or at libacct@winsor.lib.udel.edu. You may also contact Library Account Services at (302) 831-2456, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for assistance. All replacement copies need to be approved by the Library’s Acquisitions Department. A processing fee and any applicable overdue fines will be charged.

Unaffiliated borrowers and alumni

I’m not affiliated with UD, but I’d like to use the Library. Is this possible?

Yes. Anyone may walk into any branch of the University of Delaware Library and use its books, journals and electronic databases on-site without being asked for identification. However, if you would like to check books out of the Library, you would then need to purchase a Public Borrower Card. Public Borrower Cards enable members of the community to check out up to 10 books at a time at the University of Delaware Library. The annual fee is $60 and is discounted to $25 for Delaware residents. Borrowers will be asked to show their driver’s license when purchasing the card and each time when using the card. Cards are issued to individuals only and are non-transferable. Public Borrower cardholders do not have access to any databases or electronic journals from off-campus due to license restrictions. If there are specific book titles that you are interested in, you can also request them through the Interlibrary Loan service at your local public library.

I’m an alumnus and would like to use the Library. Is there a special card for alumni?

Library Public Borrower cards are discounted based upon state residency. The annual fee for Delaware residents is $25.00; the annual fee for out-of-state residents is $60.00. There is no special rate for University of Delaware alumni.

Renewing online

I want to renew my books online, but I don’t know how. Can I do this?

University of Delaware students, faculty, and staff may use “Books I Have Checked Out” to view their library account information and to renew library books online.

To use “Books I Have Checked Out,” go to DELCAT. Click on “Sign In” and enter your UDelNet ID (UNIX username) and e-mail password. The ampersand character (&) in passwords is not supported in DELCAT at this time and passwords cannot exceed 19 characters in length.

When you are done, please click on “End Session” to sign out and maintain the confidentiality of your account information. If you’re having trouble logging in to “Books I Have Checked Out” click here.

Public Borrowers are unable to use authenticated online forms such as “Books I Have Checked Out” because they are not eligible to receive the UDelNet ID these services require. Spouses, ELI students and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute participants may call the Circulation and Reserve Desk at (302) 831-2455 for more information about using “Books I Have Checked Out.”

Book retrieval

Can you retrieve a book for me that’s in the stacks and set it aside for me to pick up in the next day or two?

The University of Delaware Library will retrieve materials and hold materials requested by users who self-identify with a disability. If you need this assistance, please feel free to contact the Morris Library Circulation and Reserve Desk at (302) 831-2455 and provide the call number of the book that you need to have retrieved. The Library does not offer a book reservation or retrieval service for users who do not have a disability.
