In a move supporting the Ethical Treatment of Toys, Santa’s Elves prepared and performed a Christmas cantata called, “Santa’s Elves or the Broken Toys.” The December 20th, 1913 edition of the Evening Journal details the cantata and how the elves were upset that the toys they’d spent so much time working on were often broken before the end of Christmas Day.Santa and the Elves both decide that no more new toys will be made until children learn to take better care of their toys. When the children learn of this, they sing the, “Boo Hoo, Boo Hoo,” song, which causes Santa to give them another chance, so long as they take better care of their toys.
This may have been the beginning of extended warranties.
On behalf of the Delaware Digital Newspaper Project team, please have a safe and wondrous holiday season. And may all of your toys not break on the first day.
