About this Event
The ability to read and analyze cursive handwriting is essential for those who will encounter historic handwritten documents in the course of their research.
During this hands-on workshop, develop that skill by practicing to read and transcribe manuscripts handwritten in 19th-century American cursive from the Library’s Special Collections. You will also learn how to recognize common penmanship, and learn about the historical context of penmanship in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Kaitlyn Tanis, history and social sciences librarian, and Rebecca Johnson Melvin, manuscripts librarian and curator of the Joseph R. Biden Jr. senatorial papers, will lead the workshop.
This in-person workshop is open to UD students, faculty and staff. It is co-sponsored by the Graduate College.
Registration is required as seating is limited.
All attendees will need to show ID upon arrival. In addition, all attendees will need to complete the UD Daily Health Check the day of the event, and show the green icon reflecting health clearance upon arrival. Face masks are required for this workshop due to its classroom setting.
If necessitated by the rapidly changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, this in-person workshop may be shifted to a virtual format, postponed or canceled. Attendees will be notified by email if this occurs.
