{"id":16760,"date":"2023-03-03T18:47:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T18:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/?p=16760"},"modified":"2023-03-07T19:38:48","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T19:38:48","slug":"open-space-in-morris-library-celebrates-ud-queer-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/03\/open-space-in-morris-library-celebrates-ud-queer-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Space in Morris Library Celebrates UD Queer Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Article by Allison Ebner<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When you walk into any of the Library, Museums and Press locations across campus, we want you to feel welcome, seen and supported.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to spaces like the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/ourspaces\/spaces\/reflection-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reflection Room<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/ourspaces\/spaces\/lactation-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lactation Room<\/a> that acknowledge too-often marginalized groups in academia, we are proud to support the University of Delaware\u2019s queer community with the \u201cOpen Space\u201d study room located on the second floor of Morris Library.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16765\" src=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2023\/03\/Room201BESocial_1200x675-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior look into the &quot;Open Space&quot; study room. Inside the study room, you\u2019ll find flags highlighting different genders and sexualities, including the bisexuality flag, non-binary flag, trans flag and more. You\u2019ll also find queer-themed stickers and a sign that reads, \u201cEveryone is welcome here.\u201d The bookshelf is stocked with titles on queer history and theory. If you have a book you\u2019d like to share, QTGSU welcomes your contribution to grow the collection.<\/p>\n<p>The room and its glass walls ensure that even those who may not have occasion to use the room can see what it celebrates and recognize the space of positivity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16763\" src=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2023\/03\/Bookshelf_Alumni-e-Newsletter_800x800-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"A bookshelf with books about queer history. There are assumptions of the heteronormativity, and so I think having a space specifically for grad students that says, \u2018Yes, queer academics are here. We exist,\u2019 is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UD Library, Museums and Press is dedicated to fostering an academic environment that is accessible, flexible and inclusive in nature,\u201d said Trevor A. Dawes, vice provost for libraries and museums and May Morris University Librarian. \u201cWe were thrilled when members of the Queer and Trans Graduate Student Union reached out to us in search of a space on campus and within Morris Library to connect and study. The Library, a boundary-spanning organization, belongs to the entire Blue Hen Community and its spaces should reflect the true diversity of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can reserve the Open Space (Room 201B) through our <a href=\"https:\/\/udel.libcal.com\/space\/66117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online room reservation system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Queer and Trans Graduate Student Union was founded in 2021 as a space for queer and questioning graduate students to come together to discuss gender and sexuality as well their lives and experiences as graduate students.
