{"id":17220,"date":"2023-06-21T08:34:19","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/?p=17220"},"modified":"2023-10-31T17:21:01","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T17:21:01","slug":"wilmington-city-directories-a-showcase-of-services-businesses-and-life-in-pre-phonebook-wilmington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/2023\/06\/21\/wilmington-city-directories-a-showcase-of-services-businesses-and-life-in-pre-phonebook-wilmington\/","title":{"rendered":"Wilmington City Directories: A Showcase of Services, Businesses and Life in Pre-Phone Book Wilmington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By David Cardillo, Digital Initiatives and Preservation<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Digital Initiatives and Preservation Department is currently in the process of digitizing volumes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/udspace.udel.edu\/collections\/f5dfc181-616d-4124-b403-5824271f6803?cp.page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wilmington City Directory<\/a>, an annual publication from the 1800s through the mid-1900s that is best described as an early telephone book.<\/p>\n<p>The telephone, however, wasn\u2019t invented until 1875 \u2013 and not in homes until 1876 \u2013 so there were no telephone numbers to include in these directories. Instead, the directories listed addresses and occupations of the residents of Wilmington. The seaman Isaac Drukker, for instance, reminds us that Wilmington is a port city, and the farm hand John Drummond establishes the city as an agrarian pocket of America. The secret societies referred to groups like the Freemasons, the Knights Templar and the Knights of Columbus \u2013 exclusive, member-based fraternities that often used codes, secret handshakes and some sort of initiation ceremony. Nevertheless, the term \u201csecret\u201d seems to go against the idea of advertising in a public directory.<\/p>\n<p>Like any type of directory \u2013 be it a phone book, public listing or website \u2013 the Wilmington City Directories also contained advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>Today, these advertisements can prove especially interesting when looking at the product or service being advertised and the way in which it was marketed. They also can speak to the way technologies have changed over time.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for instance, this advertisement for an \u201codorless apparatus\u201d from the <a href=\"https:\/\/udspace.udel.edu\/handle\/19716\/32825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1878-79 volume<\/a>. As a result, the city provides a nice microcosm of the rest of 19th-century America \u2013 and the directories provide a considerable insight into the local history and culture of the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/udspace.udel.edu\/collections\/f5dfc181-616d-4124-b403-5824271f6803?cp.page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wilmington City Directories<\/a> spanning from 1814 to 1881 are freely and digitally accessible on UDSpace by the Library, Museums and Press. These directories provide a snapshot of life in 19th-century Delaware through its listings of residents, institutions, organizations and businesses. Researchers with an interest in Delaware history and 19th-century America will likely find these resources particularly useful.
