Beginning in February 1874, the company began sending the annual Cope\u2019s Christmas Card to paid subscribers. In addition to using the popular 19th-century practice of sending holiday cards that advertise its tobacco, the <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Cope Brothers Company<\/span> used several innovative advertising tactics to promote its products, including the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cope\u2019s Smoke-Room Booklets<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published between 1889-1894. The pocket-sized booklets featured articles about and promoting smoking as well as literary excerpts from famous authors, such as Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin. The Cope\u2019s cards and booklets serve as a time-capsule into the historical and social past of this period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This illustration is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/special\/home\/collections\/mark-samuels-lasner-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Samuels Lasner Collection<\/a>, which focuses on British literature and art of the period 1850 to 1900, with an emphasis on the Pre-Raphaelites and the writers and illustrators of the 1890s. The collection comprises of more than 9,750 books, periodicals, letters, manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, and artwork. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the <em>Cope\u2019s Christmas Card <\/em>of 1883, the Lasner Collection also holds copies of the <em>Cope\u2019s Smoke-Room Booklets, <\/em>including the 1893 booklet, No. 13, which was recalled due to legal proceedings initiated by John Rushkin against <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Cope Brothers Company<\/span> for printing his work without the author\u2019s
