One way to enhance student success while addressing a growing concern\u2014cost\u2014is by integrating <\/span><strong>Open and Affordable Teaching Materials (OATM)<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into your courses. OATM includes free or low-cost resources, such as <\/span><b>Open Educational Resources (OER)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong>Library-licensed materials<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can replace expensive textbooks and provide more flexibility in how you teach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine offering your students high-quality, accessible materials that won\u2019t break their budgets. With OATM, not only can you lower financial barriers, but you can also customize your teaching materials to suit your course objectives and teaching style. Best of all, the University of Delaware offers support to help you get started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To learn more, join us for an <\/span><strong>information session<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/udel.libcal.com\/event\/14026396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>February 20<\/strong> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/udel.libcal.com\/event\/14026404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>March 7, 2025<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These sessions will provide insights into the application process, share successful project examples, and offer tips for maximizing the impact of your grant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the <\/span><strong>Open and Affordable Teaching Materials Grant<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, UD faculty can receive <\/span><strong>funding<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and expert guidance from librarians and instructional designers to integrate OER and Library-licensed materials into their courses. There is also support for those that wish to author a brand new Open textbook. Whether you teach a small seminar or a large lecture, there\u2019s a grant tailored to fit your needs, allowing you to enhance your curriculum and engage your students more effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, the <\/span><strong>OATM program<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has saved <\/span><strong>Blue Hens<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than <\/span><strong>$500,000<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in textbook costs. Additionally, OATM has been linked with <\/span><strong>decreasing the achievement gap<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for students of low-income and diverse populations, making a meaningful difference in student success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Meghann McInnis-Dominguez, a 2023 grant recipient, noted, \u201cOverall, the introduction of open educational resources markedly improved course accessibility, student satisfaction, and engagement with Latin American literature in SPAN 303.\u201d Similarly, Dr. Kate Riera, a 2024 grant winner, praised the excellent support and professional development provided throughout the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grants are available in various amounts to suit courses of all sizes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Small Enrollment Courses<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (49 students or fewer): $500<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Mid-Sized Courses<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (50\u2013150 students): $1,500<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Large Enrollment Courses<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (150+ students): $5,000 (includes undergraduate student assistance)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Custom OER Development<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: $5,000 for creating tailor-made resources<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying is easy, and the benefits are significant. You\u2019ll help students save money, increase engagement, and have the opportunity to shape the future of your course.
