This year, we are proud to support 14 innovative projects spanning a wide range of disciplines. In total, six authoring grants and eight transition grants were awarded. Together, these projects will make a significant financial impact for UD students by eliminating costly textbooks and expanding access to high-quality learning resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These grants are made possible in part through generous support from the Unidel Foundation and donors to the Library, Museums and Press. Thanks to this support, our OATM program has already saved UD students more than $500,000 in textbook costs to date \u2014 and that impact continues to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that providing open and accessible teaching materials not only eliminates textbook costs, but also reduces barriers to success, helping to close educational gaps for underrepresented and underserved populations in higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We extend our sincere congratulations and gratitude to our 2025 awardees for their commitment to advancing student success and educational equity through open and affordable course materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 OATM Grant Recipients:<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authoring Grants<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigel Caplan, LING 677: Authoring <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking About Language<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an open textbook for in-service K\u201312 Delaware teachers enrolled in Structure of English. The resource will also serve a broader audience for self-study and professional learning programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jin Yao Kwan, HDFS 347: Developing an OER to support <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Subjects Research<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a focus on culturally responsive evaluation and ethical principles, saving students an estimated $2,900\u2013$5,000 per semester.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Dewey, PLSC\/CHEM 608: Creating an OER for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Soil Chemistry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> built around real-world case studies to engage students across disciplines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sebastian Cioaba, Novi Bong, Robert Coulter, MATH 210: A team developing a customized OER for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discrete Mathematics I<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featuring original handouts, homework, exams, and worksheets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Sargent, MAST 200: Authoring an open-access marine biology textbook for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oceans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, designed for non-STEM majors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tara Smith, CAS: Creating an OER for a new undergraduate elective on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Relations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providing practical, real-world instruction in an area with limited existing resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transition Grants<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bharat Patil, BUAD 447: Transitioning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BUAD 447<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to zero cost, benefiting more than 150 students each year and supporting potential broader adoption within the department.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lara Boyero, SPAN 205: Shifting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish Conversation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to open-access materials, integrating multimedia content and community voices for a richer learning experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donna Woulfe, BISC 605: Replacing costly textbooks in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced Mammalian Physiology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with open-access platforms, online workbooks, and free case studies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jill Ewing Flynn, Deborah Bieler, Kisha Porcher, ENG 491: Reducing costs in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methods in Teaching Secondary English<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by curating diverse, open-access materials for future educators.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dana Veron, GEOG 341: Transitioning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate and Climate Change<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to zero cost by integrating open resources and recorded content, with plans to extend this approach to graduate-level courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle McCarthy, Angela Holland, Phillys Gichuru, ENWC 201: Creating a zero-cost model for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildlife Ecology and Conservation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by developing new open content and compiling existing free resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa Stevens, ANTH 101: Bringing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduction to Cultural Anthropology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to zero cost for a large, online course through carefully vetted open resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heather Doty, MEEG 241: Replacing the textbook for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thermodynamics<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a free Pressbooks edition, supplemented by additional open materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All authoring projects will leverage the Library\u2019s subscription to Pressbooks, an easy-to-use platform for creating and sharing open textbooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations once again to our OATM grant recipients!
