A new academic year is upon us. As students return to campus\u2014or, in the case of freshmen, begin their college journey\u2014it\u2019s always interesting to reflect on how the start of the semester has, and hasn\u2019t, changed over time.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are a quarter of the way through the 21st Century.\u00a0 Looking back 25 years, the <\/span>first edition of <\/span>The Review<\/span><\/em> for the 2000-2001<\/span><\/a> school year highlights several campus milestones. On the front page, readers learned of Dean of Students Timothy Brooks\u2019 retirement and Delaware Men\u2019s Basketball Coach Mike Brey\u2019s departure for Notre Dame.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time, the Perkins parking lot was being transformed into the Perkins Parking Garage\u2014the second garage on campus following the Trabant structure, completed in 1995.<\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly, there was an advertisement for digital textbooks. While digital course materials never fully became mainstream, the Library, Museums and Press continues to expand access to Open Educational Resources for today\u2019s students.<\/span><\/p>\n

In what probably should have been in the first issue of <\/span>The Review<\/span><\/em> for the semester, but made it into the <\/span>4th issue (September 12, 2000),<\/span><\/a> was a Special Pull-Out Section called, \u201cWelcome to the Library.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Information Room looked quite different 25 years ago, as did the technology used in that area.\u00a0 Journals online with downloadable, printable PDFs of the print text was a new and novel thing.\u00a0 Online databases were becoming more common, a shift from when subscribed databases involved the publisher sending a CD-ROM to the library.<\/span><\/p>\n

Special Collections were not yet listed in the online card catalog, DelCAT, and users relied (and still rely) on staff-curated <\/span>finding aids<\/span><\/a> to search those collections.\u00a0 And thanks to Digital Collections, some Special Collections are available via <\/span>UDSpace<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Digital Collections on the Quartex platform<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking back even further, we have the <\/span>October 1, 1925 edition of <\/span>The Review<\/span><\/em><\/a> to kick off the 1925-1926 school year one century ago.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1925, the University of Delaware was, essentially, \u201cMen\u2019s College,\u201d as the merger with Women\u2019s College did not happen until after World War II.\u00a0 Nevertheless, <\/span>The Review<\/span><\/em> reported on events for both Men\u2019s College and Women\u2019s College.\u00a0 And as a much smaller university, <\/span>The Review<\/span><\/em> was only 4 pages with very few pictures or graphics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast with the departure of Basketball Coach Brey, 1925 introduced two coaches for both football and basketball.<\/span><\/p>\n

Equally fascinating is an advertisement from the 1925 issue offering rental cars with the slogan \u201cDrive it yourself.\u201d Considering that automobiles were still relatively new\u2014and culturally significant, as seen in <\/span>The Great Gatsby<\/span><\/em>\u2014the ad speaks to the rapid assimilation of cars into student life, perhaps targeting those traveling home for the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Across the decades, the beginning of the academic year has consistently brought announcements of campus changes, updates on summer developments, details on where to buy books and supplies, and an array of welcome-back activities. <\/span>The Review<\/span><\/em><\/a> provides this information, and past editions give a decent history of the University of Delaware and its student body, which can all be found on our institutional repository <\/span>UDSpace<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
