{"id":18846,"date":"2025-10-28T17:23:37","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T17:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/?p=18846"},"modified":"2025-10-29T13:00:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T13:00:30","slug":"open-data-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/2025\/10\/28\/open-data-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"UD Honors Excellence in Open Data with Inaugural Impact Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>photo by Evan Krape<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press, in partnership with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dsi.udel.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data Science Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/de-epscor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delaware EPSCoR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Open Data Impact Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Open Data Impact Awards celebrate UD students, faculty and staff whose openly shared datasets continue to make meaningful contributions to research, teaching and public engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAn open dataset is more than uploading a spreadsheet into a repository\u2014it requires careful attention to the curation of records and related documentation to render the data truly reusable,\u201d said Annie Johnson, associate university librarian for research, teaching and technology. \u201cThe awards committee was impressed by the quality of the applications we received, rendering the decisions very difficult to make. We commend all of the applicants for their strong commitment to increasing public access to scholarly data.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2025 Open Data Impact Award Winners<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daria Blinova, doctoral student in the College of Arts and Sciences: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dataverse.harvard.edu\/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910\/DVN\/TGKS9E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIndividual Attendance Data for UNFCCC COPs and pre-COPs\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Frankel Davis, associate professor in the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences and Endalkachew Abebe Kebede, doctoral student in the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroshare.org\/resource\/60a890eb841c460192c03bb590687145\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA global open-source dataset of monthly irrigated and rainfed cropped areas (MIRCA-OS) for the 21st century\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alon Hafri, assistant professor in the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/palresearch.org\/buildingrelations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe psychophysics of compositionality: Relational scene perception occurs in a canonical order\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Honorable Mentions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevin Brinson, assistant research professor in the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deos.udel.edu\/data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Delaware Environmental Observing System\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jing Gao, associate professor in the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7910\/DVN\/ZHMI1L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGlobal 1\/8-Degree Urban Land Fraction Grids, SSP-Consistent Projections and Base Year, v1 (2000 &#8211; 2100)\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinki Mondal, associate professor in the Department of of Geography and Spatial Sciences: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/records\/6685695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHigh-resolution remotely sensed datasets for saltwater intrusion across the Delmarva Peninsula\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Award winners presented lightning talks about their datasets during the <\/span>Delaware Data Science Symposium<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Friday, October 24. Each recipient will also receive a <\/span>$1,000 prize<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in recognition of their contributions to advancing open data at the University of Delaware.
