{"id":18984,"date":"2026-01-14T07:00:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T07:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/?p=18984"},"modified":"2026-01-10T02:36:39","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T02:36:39","slug":"williams-family-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/2026\/01\/14\/williams-family-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"Late 19th to Early 20th Century Business in Delaware: The Williams Family Papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By David Cardillo, Digital Collections and Preservation<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.udel.edu\/collections\/williams-family-papers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Williams Family Papers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> document the business and personal affairs of prominent Delaware politician and landowner James Williams (1825\u20131899) and his son Nathaniel J. Williams (1857\u20131943). Nathaniel followed in his father\u2019s footsteps as a politician and landowner. The collection also includes records from Parvis &amp; Williams, a Middletown-based fertilizer manufacturing company led by James Williams after he joined John Parvis in 1885.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Materials in the collection include correspondence, college notebooks, account books, ledgers, canceled checks, tax forms, stock and real estate transactions, legal records, bills and ephemera. Together, these materials provide insight into late 19th- and early 20th-century business practices in Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One notable item is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.udel.edu\/Documents\/Detail\/letters-1876-1904\/233327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter written by Nathaniel\u2019s uncle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while Nathaniel was away at college. Although Nathaniel attended the University of Virginia rather than Delaware College, which later became the University of Delaware, the letter offers a vivid snapshot of daily life in Middletown at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18986\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18986\" class=\"wp-image-18986\" src=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Correspondance.png\" alt=\"Handwritten letter dated June 9, 1871 from Middletown, Delaware written in cursive ink on lined paper. The letter is addressed to a person named Stephen and discusses receiving an invitation to attend a university society celebration, travel plans and observations about growth and new houses in Middletown.\" width=\"550\" height=\"836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Correspondance.png 442w, https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Correspondance-197x300.png 197w, https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Correspondance-380x578.png 380w, https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Correspondance-160x243.png 160w, https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Correspondance-240x365.png 240w, https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Correspondance-365x555.png 365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Written on June 9, 1899, the letter describes new houses under construction and preparations for hauling a large peach crop, reflecting the region\u2019s economic activity and agricultural roots.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collection also includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.udel.edu\/Documents\/Detail\/scrapbook-1881\/258424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a scrapbook created by Martha E. Clayton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Middletown, Delaware. It contains newspaper clippings alongside handwritten notes detailing home remedies, cooking recipes and household cleaning instructions. Among the entries are directions for a sulfuric acid compound believed to prevent illness, a printed home remedy for cholera and advice on helping hens lay eggs during the winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18987\" src=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/01\/Scrapbook_Smallpox-1024x225.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of a handwritten historical note in dark ink on aged paper describing how to avoid smallpox.
