But for many local Newark residents, Newark Nite has long been the true signal that summer has begun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an eight-year hiatus, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarkpostonline.com\/news\/newark-nite-festival-to-return-this-summer-after-8-year-hiatus\/article_361a0d26-43c8-48a5-bedb-d6ad2e3a239f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newark Nite is returning in its full form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beloved event began 40 years ago in 1986, when University of Delaware professor Dr. Jeff Miller partnered with the City of Newark to help revitalize the downtown area. The first Newark Nite, held on Saturday, June 7, 1986, was an immediate success and became an annual event, although the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/udspace.udel.edu\/handle\/19716\/13507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newark Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article on June 11th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicated an uncertain future for the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19132 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2026\/05\/MMDrycleaners.jpg\" alt=\"A newspaper clipping features three black-and-white photographs of people enjoying the &quot;Newark Nite&quot; festival on Main Street, including a family walking together and a street performer entertaining onlookers. In response, the event was rebranded into a daytime festival called Newark Day. However, the new format created challenges, as local businesses now found themselves competing directly with outside vendors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, there was another rebranding where the event was restricted to Downtown Newark businesses and called New Night Downtown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The below article from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/udspace.udel.edu\/handle\/19716\/23423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newark Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, June 10, 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that there were still events and activities for children. Then came the COVID-19 shutdown, and no similar event has been held since June 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarkpostonline.com\/news\/newark-nite-festival-to-return-this-summer-after-8-year-hiatus\/article_361a0d26-43c8-48a5-bedb-d6ad2e3a239f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newark Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the City Council approved $15,000 to Parks and Recreation to bring back Newark Nite. It is scheduled for Friday night, June 5, on Main Street between South Chapel Street and South College Avenue. Planners and coordinators are expecting, or hoping, for 8,000 to 10,000 people with the hopes that, if successful, crowd size will return to the approximate 30,000 people the event attracted during its peak years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many residents, Newark Nite was always more than just a street festival. It was a reason to gather with friends, try new foods, enjoy live entertainment, and take memorable \u2014 and sometimes silly \u2014 photos together.
