The collection spans from the late 17th century through 1987 and documents the personal, professional and social lives of these prominent Delaware families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collection\u2019s depth and richness are largely due to Mary Thomas Bringhurst (1865\u20131965), whose dedication to preserving her family\u2019s history helped ensure the survival of thousands of documents and artifacts related to Rockwood and its residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shipley and Bringhurst families were prominent Quakers who played significant roles in Wilmington\u2019s religious, social, business and civic communities. The collection reflects these connections through correspondence, financial records, business documents, diaries, photographs and other materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the collection\u2019s correspondence is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.udel.edu\/Documents\/Detail\/charles-dickens-letter-to-dr.-gill-1864-january-11\/351621?item=351626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter from renowned English author Charles Dickens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, written in 1864 to Dr. Gill regarding financial assistance for a patient\u2019s medical care.
