Abstract:Journalist and novelist George Alfred Townsend was born in Georgetown, Delaware, on January 30, 1841. His reports of Lincoln's assassination and General Sheridan's victory at the Battle of Five Forks,[...] Virginia, brought him considerable recognition. During the 1860s and 1870s his columns, articles, and letters appeared in newspapers throughout the United States. The George Alfred Townsend papers consist of five bound volumes of manuscripts, letters, and published works written by George Alfred Townsend. The papers span the dates 1865 to 1975 (bulk dates 1865-1898) and include handwritten, typescript, and printed material.

Abstract:The American Academy of Music, incorporated on March 24, 1852, built in Philadelphia one of America's grandest nineteenth-century opera houses. Not long after its incorporation, the Academy came under the[...] influence of the Baker family of Philadelphia. Two successive generations of the Baker family presided over the Academy from the 1880s to the 1920s. Under their tenure, the Academy became widely known for presentations of opera and classical music. The American Academy of Music papers provide an incomplete, but useful, glimpse of the institutional structure and entertainment programming of this Philadelphia hall in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although the collection spans almost a hundred years between 1852 and circa 1940, it primarily consists of correspondence and a limited number of printed items from the years 1896-1897 and 1901-1919. Only scattered materials are preserved from before 1896, and no information from the period 1898-1900 is available in this collection.

Abstract:The affluent Baker family of Philadelphia was closely tied to two other prominent Philadelphia families, the Fales and the Rush families. Alfred G. Baker, a successful Philadelphia businessman, married[...] the daughter of George Fales, originally from Bristol, Rhode Island, who in turn had married the daughter of Lewis Rush.The Baker-Fales-Rush family papers consists of three linear feet of material related to these interrelated Philadelphia families. Materials in the collection span over more than a century from 1800 to 1926. The bulk of the material in the collection is from the period 1820-1920. The collection preserves a variety of genres including correspondence, essays, speeches, contracts, estate inventories, ledgers, financial journals, and checks.

The majority of these cards date from the nineteenth century and provide important information regarding addresses and in some cases, images of buildings. Also included in this collection are various announcements and invitations, regarding weddings, deaths, and commencement exercises.
