Abstract:The Nineteenth-century American military collection is an artificial collection that contains 1.6 linear feet of American military records spanning the period 1846-1903. The bulk of the collection dates from the[...] American Civil War (1861-1865). Additional records are from the Reconstruction period (1865-1877) and the remainder of the nineteenth century. There are also five items pertaining to the Mexican War (1846-1848) and two documents from the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers from 1856-1858. The records primarily document the administrative and bureaucratic logistics of waging a war and maintaining an army. Items include official correspondence between officers; orders; morning, trimonthly, and consolidated reports of unit manpower and supplies; food inspections; cargo and livestock manifests; provisions for supplies; and discharges and appointments of individual soldiers. Some personal letters (11 items) to and from Civil War soldiers are also present, as are a number of personal letters to and from Civil War veterans written during the post-war period.

Abstract:Cornelius Masten was a mid-nineteenth-century resident of the town of Milo, village of Penn Yan, Yates County, New York State. Abstract:Thomas Shipley was a conveyancer and dealt primarily in the business of drawing deeds, leases, or other writings for transferring the title of property, and settling estates. His son, Walter[...] Penn Shipley, was born on June 20, 1860, was a Philadelphia lawyer. The Shipley Family Papers contain 229 items including correspondence, printed documents, receipts, and account books pertaining to Thomas Shipley and his business, as well as to his son Walter Penn Shipley. The bulk of the material relates to the years when Thomas Shipley was most active as a conveyancer, 1850- 1888; however, a few items date from the 1840s, and Walter Penn Shipley's correspondence reaches into the first decade of the twentieth century. This collection contains many documents which deal with title transfers, leases, and real estate sales in Philadelphia. In addition, the collection contains correspondence, documents, and receipts that relate to the settlements of the estates of Samuel J. Henderson, John W. Furlong, Joseph Banes, Reynolds Hamm, and John Phillips.

Abstract:Charles Eucharist de Medicis Sajous (1852-1929) was born December 13, 1852. As a physician, teacher, author, and editor, Charles Sajous became a prominent name in the late nineteenth-century medical profession.[...] The Dr. Charles Sajous Papers contain over 2000 items dating from 1870 through the 1920s, and include letters, postcards, receipts, and financial statements; manuscripts of articles, speeches, book reviews, editorials, and journals; and newspaper articles that belonged to Dr. Charles Sajous and his family. The bulk of the material dates from the first two decades of the twentieth century. Dr. Sajous' career, as documented in the Sajous papers, reflects the growing professionalization of medicine in the late nineteenth century. This collection illustrates the contributions of medical schools, professional associations, and journals in making that professionalization possible. Also in this collection, the personal papers and correspondence with friends and family offer glimpses of American middle-class lifestyle of the period.

Abstract:The Roop-Rogers Family Papers consist of letters as well as miscellaneous documents and ephemera. The correspondence was exchanged between family members who were centered in the Seaford-Laurel area of Delaware[...] and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The main recipients are the Bradley sisters, Jane Bradley Rogers and Susannah Bradley Roop. Their correspondents included their children, siblings, cousins, and aunts; and Susannah's husband, Dr. F.A. Roop and her mother-in-law, Marie J. Roop. Most letters in the collection contain family news but there are also some political and religious discussions.

Price papers consist of two linear feet of legal material. Price was a leading Philadelphia real estate lawyer, a fact reflected in the collection. The collection is divided into three series. Series I covers Price’s correspondence; series II contains material from his law office; series III consists of materials from Price’s activities outside his legal practice.

Abstract:The Beadle Dime Novels, together with numerous other publications issued by the firms Beadle and Co., Irwin P. Beadle and Co., and Beadle and Adams, were a tremendously successful foray[...] in cheap literature for the mass public. Dime novels, like the story papers that had preceded them and the pulp magazines that would replace them in the twentieth century, delivered adventurous or sensational stories in inexpensive, paper-bound editions. The material in the Beadle Archives collection consists of .3 linear feet of letters, photographs, bills, and documents relating to Erastus F. Beadle and the dime booklet publishing house in which he was a partner. The collection is organized in three series: Series I contains letters and papers related to Erastus F. Beadle, one of the firm's founders; Series II contains letters written in tribute to Orville J. Victor, longtime editor for Beadle and Adams; and Series III contains letters written to Dr. Frank P. O'Brien, a collector of Beadle memorabilia.

Abstract:J.K. Wright Printing Ink Company, located in center- city Philadelphia, was originally incorporated in 1902 in Camden, New Jersey. Its purpose was “to manufacture [...] printers and lithographers inks, varnishes, plate oils, pigments, paints and oils, and kindred products and to buy, sell, trade, deal in and with the same.” The J.K. Wright Printing Ink Company Records, spanning the dates 1852-1923, consists of .5 linear feet of prints, letterhead, minutes, ledger, and magazines. This small collection documents an ink business at the beginning of the twentieth century in Philadelphia. The majority of the records consists of minutes from the company’s first three years and a ledger with formulas to make inks.
