Abstract:The Dyeing Catalog Collection comprises 365 trade catalogs related to the European dyeing industry. The dates range from 1893 to 1960, although the largest part of the collection dates to[...] before 1925. Most of the catalogs are in German, but the collection also includes materials in French, Dutch, and English. The catalogs represent a number of German companies, including Agfa, Bayer, Kalle & Co., and the Leopold Cassella Co. Industrial societies, such as the Gesellschaft fur Chemische Industrie in Basel, are also represented. British companies include the British Celanese Co., the British Dyestuffs Corporation, and the Imperial Chemical Industries. Most of the catalogs include samples of dye on various types of material, including paper, wood, textiles, yarn, and fur.

Abstract:Futurism, a twentieth-century movement founded by the Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (1876-1944), embraced literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, and music. Marinetti called for a new art form that would reflect[...] contemporary living conditions and break with the aesthetic traditions of the nineteenth century. The Futurism collection consists of notes, clippings, and essays compiled by Luigi Scrivo and P. Bellanova for their proposed history of Futurism, "Volgarizzazione del Futurismo." The bulk of the material in this collection is written in Italian. Included are five different plans for the work; the manuscripts of approximately eight essays; five collections of statements from Mussolini, Ezra Pound, and others; numerous clippings; tear sheets from "Il Libro Italiano;" and an annotated Marinetti bibliography.

Abstract:The publisher, Dodd, Mead and Company, was begun in New York City in 1839 as the firm, Taylor and Dodd. In 1876, Bleecker Van Wagenen became a partner and the[...] name was changed to its final form, Dodd, Mead and Company. The Dodd, Mead and Company Archive consists of two linear feet of material. The archive is comprised of correspondence, contracts, photographs, wills, probate documents, biographies, drafts, notes, copyright documents, poems, printed programs, ephemera, and clippings. This selection of the company files details the business arrangements between the publisher and various Black American authors. Authors included in this collection are Arna Wendell Bontemps, Benjamin Brawley, Orde Coombs, Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Alan Lomax, and Raoul Abdul. The University of Delaware Library holds only a small portion of the Dodd Mead Archives. The University of Delaware Library does not have any information regarding disposition of the remainder of the archive.

Abstract:English journalist and editor Clement King Shorter was born in London, at Southwark, on July 19, 1857. Shorter began his career in journalism in 1888,[...] writing a weekly column about books for the Star and working as a sub-editor for the Penny Illustrated Paper, later taking a turn as editor for a numbeer of different newspapers, including the Illustrated London News, The Sphere, and The Tatler, among others. In the early 1900s, Shorter's main interest had become collecting manuscripts, books, and ephemera related to his favorite authors. Shorter was a particularly avid collector of material related to the Brontës. Shorter's collection and research eventually developed into several books on the Brontës. Clement Shorter's published writing also included several volumes on Napoleon, two works on George Borrow, a volume of essays and addresses, and a fragment of his autobiography

Abstract:Publisher Richard Cobden Sanderson was the son of British bookbinder and printer Thomas James Cobden. In 1919, Richard Cobden Sanderson established himself as a publisher, with partners Kenneth Rae and[...] Boofie Gore (later Lord Arran). From his office at Thavies Inn, Holborn, Cobden Sanderson earned a reputation for publishing books noted for the quality of their content and presentation. The letters to Richard Cobden Sanderson consist of over 375 letters (.6 linear feet), several documents, and a prospectus for Cobden Sanderson's publication, The Annual. Although most of the letters are addressed to Richard Cobden Sanderson, some are written to his wife Gwladys (Sally), and certainly most refer to her. The letters reflect the deep friendships formed between the Cobden Sandersons and their acquaintances and publishing associates. Letters written during World War II offer vivid and detailed accounts of life in Great Britain during the war, i.e. the bombing of London, the displacement of families, rationing, the necessity for vegetable gardening and livestock management by anyone with land, the loss of friends and family, work at the Ministry of Information, among other topics.
