Abstract:Edward William Martin was born on November 2, 1891, in Inverarnan, Scotland. His family moved to Delaware when he was a child, and he attended Wilmington High School and[...] the University of Delaware. Martin was a well-respected architect in Delaware, and worked on a large number of projects for schools, hospitals, government buildings, and private residences. Martin also participated in the Depression-era Historic American Buildings Survey project (HABS), initiated by the historic architects of the National Park Service. The E. William Martin collection contains sketches and watercolors, blueprints, floor plans, photographs, maps, brochures, and various other architectural drawings. Series I contains sketches from his study tours around Paris and Italy and his speech given to the Liverpool Architectural Society following these tours; Series II contains drawings, blueprints, and floor plans from his projects; and Series III contains miscellaneous items, such as letters, a speech, and other memorabilia, brochures, photographs, and Newark (Delaware) maps. This collection by no means contains the complete output of Martin's five decades of work as either a student or professional architect, but it does provide a good idea of the diversity and level of his talents.

The collection dates from 1917 to 1963, with bulk of the material dating from 1949 to 1961. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, legislation, speeches, clippings, photographs, and audio-visual material. Personal material includes correspondence, class notes, travel brochures and post cards, and memorabilia.

Douglas was also a leading American book designer and an authority on typography. The Lester Douglas Collection includes 4.6 linear feet of correspondence, proofs, printed material, art work, and ephemera related to the personal and professional life of Lester Douglas. Correspondents include Paul A. Bennett, Typographic Promotion Manager for Mergenthaler Linotype Co.; Herman Cohen of Chiswick Bookstore; F. E. Dayton, Sales Manager of The Conde Nast Press; Bill Reydel; and Mrs. Edna Rushmore of the Golden Hind Press, among others.

Abstract:Publisher Richard Cobden Sanderson was the son of British bookbinder and printer Thomas James Cobden. In 1919, Richard Cobden Sanderson established himself as a publisher, with partners Kenneth Rae and[...] Boofie Gore (later Lord Arran). From his office at Thavies Inn, Holborn, Cobden Sanderson earned a reputation for publishing books noted for the quality of their content and presentation. The letters to Richard Cobden Sanderson consist of over 375 letters (.6 linear feet), several documents, and a prospectus for Cobden Sanderson's publication, The Annual. Although most of the letters are addressed to Richard Cobden Sanderson, some are written to his wife Gwladys (Sally), and certainly most refer to her. The letters reflect the deep friendships formed between the Cobden Sandersons and their acquaintances and publishing associates. Letters written during World War II offer vivid and detailed accounts of life in Great Britain during the war, i.e. the bombing of London, the displacement of families, rationing, the necessity for vegetable gardening and livestock management by anyone with land, the loss of friends and family, work at the Ministry of Information, among other topics.

Abstract:The Dyeing Catalog Collection comprises 365 trade catalogs related to the European dyeing industry. The dates range from 1893 to 1960, although the largest part of the collection dates to[...] before 1925. Most of the catalogs are in German, but the collection also includes materials in French, Dutch, and English. The catalogs represent a number of German companies, including Agfa, Bayer, Kalle & Co., and the Leopold Cassella Co. Industrial societies, such as the Gesellschaft fur Chemische Industrie in Basel, are also represented. British companies include the British Celanese Co., the British Dyestuffs Corporation, and the Imperial Chemical Industries. Most of the catalogs include samples of dye on various types of material, including paper, wood, textiles, yarn, and fur.
