Abstract:Nancy Cunard (1896-1965) daughter of Sir Bache Cunard, of the shipping family, and Lady Emerald Cunard, was brought up in England. In 1920 she moved to Paris and became acquainted[...] with many of the writers and artists living there. Inspired by Leonard and Virginia Woolf, who published her poem Parallax at their Hogarth Press, she learned printing and operated the Hours Press in France from 1928 to 1931, publishing work by Walter Lowenfels, Laura Riding, Robert Graves, Alvaro Guevara, Richard Aldington, and others. The eight letters in this small collection are together as a result of Hugh Ford's 1968 volume Nancy Cunard: Brave Poet, Indomitable Rebel. Two letters are from Ford to David Garnett regarding Nancy Cunard, and six letters from Cunard to Garnett are apparently those which Garnett shared with Ford for the project. Cunard's letters span from the early days of her friendship with Garnett in 1928 until just before her death in 1965, and Ford's letters to Garnett date from 1968 and 1970.

These items were printed as tributes to Frederic Goudy on his various birthdays, on anniversaries of The Village Press, and other occasions. Other material in this collection includes tributes to Bertha Goudy, portraits of Frederic Goudy, examples of types designed by Goudy, booklets and articles written by Goudy, material about Goudy and his work, a small amount of correspondence, and samples of his stationery.

Abstract:Poet and biographer John Malcolm Brinnin was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on September 13, 1916. Brinnin was the first person to bring Welsh poet Dylan Thomas to the United[...] States and was responsible for all of Dylan Thomas's reading tours in this country. Born November 18, 1911 in Imrali, Turkey, Kimon Friar was naturalized as an American citizen in 1920. Friar has translated and edited a variety of works by Greek poets and writers, including Nikos Kazantzakis, Theodore Roubanis, Miltos Sahtouris, Odysseus Elytis, Takis Sinopoulos, Yannis Ritsos, Manolis Anagnostakis and Kostas Kindinis. The John Malcolm Brinnin-Kimon Friar Correspondence consists of four linear feet of material and is comprised of correspondence, photographs, two phonograph recordings, autograph and typescript poems and short stories. The material was collected by Kimon Friar, a close friend of Brinnin during the 1930s and 1940s. The bulk of the material (8 boxes) consists of Brinnin's letters to Kimon Friar. Enclosed in some of these letters are photographs and poetry written by Brinnin.
