Title:Nineteenth-century American military collection

Abstract:The Nineteenth-century American military collection is an artificial collection that contains 1.6 linear feet of American military records spanning the period 1846-1903. The bulk of the collection dates from the[...] American Civil War (1861-1865). Additional records are from the Reconstruction period (1865-1877) and the remainder of the nineteenth century. There are also five items pertaining to the Mexican War (1846-1848) and two documents from the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers from 1856-1858. The records primarily document the administrative and bureaucratic logistics of waging a war and maintaining an army. Items include official correspondence between officers; orders; morning, trimonthly, and consolidated reports of unit manpower and supplies; food inspections; cargo and livestock manifests; provisions for supplies; and discharges and appointments of individual soldiers. Some personal letters (11 items) to and from Civil War soldiers are also present, as are a number of personal letters to and from Civil War veterans written during the post-war period.

Abstract:This journal was owned by Private John C. Grover of the Massachusetts 17th Infantry and chronicles his experiences fighting in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Grover's journal[...] contains frequent, autograph entries chronicling his experiences as a Union soldier in the Civil War from September 18, 1861, to July 27, 1865. Entries are short, but they provide information on troop movements, battles (occurring in North Carolina), orders, Grover's pay, the supplies he received, his daily activities, and news from other regiments. He also mentioned many soldiers dying of fever.

Abstract:This antebellum and mid-nineteenth century scrapbook from the American South bears the name Clara Agnes Boulter on the inside front endpaper. The contents of this book are largely centered on[...] ladies' manners, etiquette, advice, short stories, and fashion for women, though a significant component includes references to Confederate generals and Southern sympathies. Several items suggest the creator had ties to Texas and Virginia, and new clippings from Southern papers in Knoxville, Louisville, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Arkansas are found throughout the volume. The book features both fine and newsprint engravings, numerous news clippings of verse and articles, some original verse and art, and a few color prints. The volume includes two oval-cut albumen print photographs affixed to the pages, circa 1860s. One is of a house near a river with a water wheel and the second is of the Alamo in San Antonio.
