Abstract:Under direction of the Secretary of the Treasury, the United States Light-House Board* was created in 1852. The purpose of the board was to oversee[...] the United States Light-House Establishment, a body created in 1789 to manage the twelve colonial lighthouses that were then in existence along the eastern seaboard, as well as to oversee construction of new structures. The U.S. Light-House Establishment Collection concerns the construction and maintenance of lighthouses located in the Fourth Light-House District around the Delaware Bay. The collection, spanning the period 1875-1912, comprises 1.5 linear feet and oversize material, and includes contracts, bids, correspondence, plans, a logbook, and an account book. The bulk of the items in the collection are bid and contract packets for various work projects in the Fourth Light-House District.

Abstract:Born in England in 1784, Robert Hoe studied carpentry before immigrating to the United States in 1803. Upon arrival, Hoe met Matthew Smith and together[...] they formed Smith, Hoe & Company in 1805 in New York City, specializing in the manufacture of wooden hand presses. Following the death of Smith, Hoe took over the company and changed its name to R. Hoe & Company in 1822. The R. Hoe & Company collection consists of one linear foot of material spanning the dates 1876 to 1929. During this period, the company main offices were located in the block 504 to 520 Grand Street in New York City. The collection includes catalogs for various pieces of printing machinery, samples of company letterhead, price lists for materials produced by R. Hoe & Company, printed collections of publisher opinions regarding the quality and efficiency of Hoe products, British patents extended to R. Hoe & Company for manufacture in London, assorted printed ephemera of R. Hoe & Company, and ephemera related to William R. Fish, a civil engineer who patented various improvements in the field of printing technology.

Abstract:The Girvin Family papers span from 1869 to 1910 and consist principally of personal and professional papers of turn-of-the century Philadelphian physicians Robert M. [...] Girvin and his son, John Harper Girvin. The collection consists of two series: correspondence and receipts of various family members. Highlights of business correspondence to Dr. Robert Girvin include late 1880s letters from Theodore Pruden about the Girvin and Mylin bog in Toms River, New Jersey. Also notable are the letters pertaining to a Dunlow Coal Company lawsuit. The family letters from Europe to John Girvin in April - July 1902 are highly detailed. Mrs. Girvin wrote to John Harper Girvin almost daily, often writing jointly to him and his brother Robert M. Girvin, Jr.

Abstract:Journalist and novelist George Alfred Townsend was born in Georgetown, Delaware, on January 30, 1841. By 1866, Townsend had become a noted news journalist, as[...] a war correspondent covering the Civil War for the New York Herald, the New York World, and later, as a ghost writer, for The New York Times. His reports of Lincoln’s assassination and General Sheridan’s victory at the Battle of Five Forks, Virginia, brought him considerable recognition. The George Alfred Townsend correspondence collection includes letters and telegrams addressed to Townsend, legal documents, and other ephemera related to Townsend’s life and work. Other than one letter written to Townsend’s wife and several letters of introduction, the correspondence is addressed directly to Townsend by various friends, business associates, editors, and admirers. Also included in the collection are publishing contracts, a copyright claim, and a summons to appear in court.

The William John Williams papers consist of .7 linear feet of correspondence, copybooks, letterpress books, science notebooks, blueprints, patent documents, scientific documents, chemistry manuscripts, booklets, playscripts, advertisements, circulars, and notes. Three series comprise the collection: I. Correspondence, II. Professional Papers, and III. Personal Papers. Correspondence and professional papers in the collection indicate that Williams found and pursued numerous occupational opportunities within the dynamic fields of chemistry and manufacturing found in Philadelphia and the greater Delaware Valley in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure. born in County Antrim, Ireland, on February 17, 1857, are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by[...] Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine, contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. The material in the McClure Publishing Company Archive contains 1 linear foot of correspondence, photographs, clippings, financial and legal documents, and manuscripts relating to the company. There is also a significant amount of material concerning the company's founder, Samuel Sidney McClure, along with documents relating to his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure. The collection is organized in three series. The first contains primarily business correspondence from various literary figures and McClure staff members. The second includes various material relating to Samuel Sidney McClure. The third contains financial and legal documents relating to Henry Herbert McClure.
