Abstract:Ernest Hemingway was an American journalist, novelist, and short story writer. By the late 1930s, his reputation was well established by the success of his novels The Sun Also Rises[...] (1926) and A Farewell to Arms (1929), and his non-fiction works Death in the Afternoon (1932) and Green Hills of Africa (1935). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. The Ernest Hemingway manuscripts is a collection of typescript and carbon typescript drafts of six of Ernest Hemingway's literary works: "A Clean Well Lighted Place," "Fathers and Sons," The Fifth Column, "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen," "Green Hills of Africa", and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." The manuscripts in this collection formerly belonged to T. Otto Bruce, known as Toby, who served as Hemingway's chauffeur and companion.

Abstract:Amy Roberta (Berta) Ruck was born in Muree, India, on August 2, 1878. Initially, Ruck worked as an illustrator, providing drawings for stories in The Idler and the children's magazine[...] Jabberwocky. In the latter, she was also able to publish a short story, and also began writing fiction for women's magazines. With the assistance of her husband, Ruck revised her story "His Official Fiancée," for publication in book form. The novel was a success in both Great Britain and the United States, and it began Ruck's prolific career as a popular writer. Over the next fifty-eight years, she would publish over a hundred books, often producing as many as three a year. The collection includes six volumes, as well as correspondence, photographs, and ephemera laid or pasted in. Ruck's journals are a mix of diary, workbook, and scrapbook. They contain partial drafts of her works in progress, accounts of her financial and romantic difficulties, and memorabilia from her travels. The journals contain letters from Ruck's family and friends, including her two sons Arthur and William, and her father. Ruck also included pieces of her fan mail.

The British writer George Oliver Onions[...] was born November 13, 1872, in Bradford, England; he died April 9, 1961. Onions legally changed his name to George Oliver in 1918, but continued to publish ghost stories, mysteries, and historical fiction, as Oliver Onions. During his early writing career Onions frequently published his short stories in magazines. His trilogy of novels--In Accordance with the Evidence (1910), The Debit Account (1913), and The Story of Louie (1913)--established Onions's reputation as a writer of psychological thrillers. The Oliver Onions Papers comprises .3 linear feet of correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, travel journals and ephemera related to Onions. The collection is divided into two series: manuscripts and travel journals.

Abstract:George Herbert Ryden (1884-1941), a history professor at the University of Delaware and Delaware State Archivist, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. The George Herbert Ryden collection consists of correspondence[...] files from 1927 to 1941, with the bulk of the letters from 1936 to 1939. It includes carbon copies and some originals of Ryden's outgoing letters as well as letters he received in the conduct of his affairs. However, at least a third to a half of the collection are carbons of others’ correspondence copied to Ryden because of his positions with the AAUP or Swedish-American Historical Foundation and Museum.

Abstract:The W. Merritt Burke III pulp paperback book collection comprises pulp novels primarily published in the United States in the 1930s and 1940s. The bulk[...] of the novels are mystery and detective fiction; however there are a few westerns as well. The collection includes work by many of the important authors of the period, including Eric Bentley, John Dickson Carr, Raymond Chandler, Agatha Christie, Erle Stanley Gardner, Mary Rinehart, Mickey Spillane, Rex Stout, and others. All of the important paperback publishers of the period are represented in this collection, including pulp-fiction publishers Avon, Bantam, Pocket Books, Popular Library, and Dell. Included in the Dell paperbacks are a run of the famous Dell map-back mysteries, which featured maps related to the fictional mysteries on the back covers of the titles in the series.
