Abstract:The Ralph Delauney papers related to Tennessee Williams's The Rose Tattoo consist of .6 linear feet of material. The papers are comprised of the playscript and revisions, correspondence, bills and[...] receipts, budgets, clippings, notes, itineraries, theater programs, and sketches of the set. The material was gathered by Ralph Delauney in his role as stage manager for both the 1950 world premiere production of Tennessee Williams's The Rose Tattoo at Erlanger Theatre in Chicago, and the 1951 New York run at the Martin Beck Theatre. As the stage manager Delauney was responsible for arranging for rehearsals (space, schedule, props), securing addresses and phone numbers for cast and crew, preparing a master script, setting up the stage, serving as liaison between director and technical staff, organizing and training the crew, laying out floor plans for staging, compiling master lists (sounds, lights, props, etc.) and distributing scripts and revisions. On opening night he also assumed full responsibility and authority backstage for the run of the show.

Abstract:English calligrapher and illuminator William Graily Hewitt was born on July 20, 1864, in London. After a brief writing career, Graily Hewitt began studying manuscripts and experimenting with calligraphy. He[...] became acquainted with the noted bookbinder Sydney Cockerell, who encouraged him to study with the noted calligrapher Edward Johnston. The 39 letters in this collection from English calligrapher and illuminator William Graily Hewitt to American book designer Sidney Feinberg, were written between 1944 and 1952. The correspondence was initiated by Feinberg when he was serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army and stationed in Great Britain during World War II. Feinberg's request for advice about his handwriting and his expression of interest in calligraphy and printing launched a friendship and correspondence with Hewitt which lasted until Hewitt's death in 1952.

Abstract:Irish painter and illustrator Jack B. Yeats was born August 29, 1871, in London, England. He was the son of John Butler Yeats, a successful portrait painter, and the younger[...] brother of the distinguished Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Until about 1910 Yeats worked mainly as an illustrator and with watercolors; then he began to focus on oil painting. His paintings contributed to the upsurge of nationalist feeling in the arts that followed the winning of Irish independence. Thirty-nine letters and cards related to Jack B. Yeats comprise this collection, which was originally gathered by San Franciscans Eleanor and Frederick B. Reid. Twelve letters and five cards were written by Jack B. Yeats to the Reids between 1946 and 1957, with each of the five cards bearing an original ink drawing by Yeats. Another twenty letters were written by Frederick B. Reid to his wife Eleanor, during and following his 1954 trip to Ireland. Finally, the collection includes two letters to a Mr. McLoughlin, one from Jack B. Yeats and the other from Yeats's wife Cottie.

Abstract:The American composer and author Paul Frederic Bowles was born in New York City on December 30, 1910. Back in New York in 1930, he[...] studied composition with Aaron Copland, whom he also accompanied to Yaddo in Sarasota Springs, New York, and Paris, Berlin, and Tangier. His successful career as a composer took off in the Depression with work for the Federal Theater Project (including music for Orson Welles’s Horse Eats Hat) and the Federal Music Project. Bowles became one of the preeminent composers of American theater music, producing works for William Saroyan, Tennessee Williams, and others. In 1938, Paul Bowles married the aspiring writer Jane Auer, who shortly achieved critical acclaim for her first novel, Two Serious Ladies (1943). Inspired by his wife’s success and her dedication to writing, Bowles began his own career as an author, eventually surpassing his already successful reputation as a composer. Irene Herrmann holds degrees in German literature, music, as well as performance practice. She has performed for many years with the New Music Works of Santa Cruz, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, and various ensembles at University of California, Santa Cruz, where she also teaches courses in the Music Department. Herrmann worked extensively with Paul Bowles and serves as the executor of Bowles’s musical estate. The Irene Herrmann-Paul Bowles music collection consists of music manuscripts, published sheet music, and sound recordings related to the American composer and writer Paul Bowles. The collected includes four series: I. music by Paul Bowles, manuscript music, II. music by other, III. ephemera, and IV. sound records. There is also an appendix of a Moroccan music recoordings index and tape list.

Spiller Collection consists of twenty-six letters, reviews, articles, or printed items related to or collected by Spiller. The items are sorted into several small groups. Some of printed ephemera were originally laid in books from the personal library of Spiller. The books have been catalogued and are available in either Special Collections or Morris Library. Any item removed from a book has a pencilled notation on the item naming the book.

Abstract:Wilbur Owen Sypherd, former professor and administrator at the University of Delaware, was born on June 28, 1877 in Cecil County, Maryland. Sypherd was a Professor of English and Chairman[...] of the English Department at Delaware College, starting in 1906. He served in these roles until 1944, when he became acting president of the University. He was acting president until 1946, when, in honor of his service to the University of Delaware, he was named president by the Board of Trustees.The Wilbur Owen Sypherd Papers consists of correspondence between Sypherd and various individuals, including U.S. Senator J. Caleb Boggs, U.S. Senator John J. Williams, and George S. Messersmith. The papers also include a variety of manuscripts written by Sypherd for lectures, addresses, books, and research requests.
