Abstract:Writer Alfred Chester was born on September 7, 1928 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to a family of Jewish-Russian immigrants. The Alfred Chester collection consists of 31 letters written by Chester to[...] his friend Curtis Harnack, during the years 1951 to 1959, the period spanning his stay in Paris. The letters provide great insight into the life of Alfred Chester and into the pieces he was composing while in Paris, especially Here Be Dragons (1955) and Jamie Is My Heart's Desire (1956). The letters chronicle Chester's many frustrations with writing and getting published; they also contain preliminary ideas and descriptions of his work.

Abstract:American author and scholar Robert E. Spiller was born November 13, 1896 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving an AB in 1917, an MA[...] in 1921 and a Ph.D. in 1924. The Robert E. Spiller Collection consists of twenty-six letters, reviews, articles, or printed items related to or collected by Spiller. The items are sorted into several small groups. Some of printed ephemera were originally laid in books from the personal library of Spiller. The books have been catalogued and are available in either Special Collections or Morris Library. Any item removed from a book has a pencilled notation on the item naming the book.

Abstract:Irish painter and illustrator Jack B. Yeats was born August 29, 1871, in London, England. He was the son of John Butler Yeats, a successful portrait painter, and the younger[...] brother of the distinguished Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Until about 1910 Yeats worked mainly as an illustrator and with watercolors; then he began to focus on oil painting. His paintings contributed to the upsurge of nationalist feeling in the arts that followed the winning of Irish independence. Thirty-nine letters and cards related to Jack B. Yeats comprise this collection, which was originally gathered by San Franciscans Eleanor and Frederick B. Reid. Twelve letters and five cards were written by Jack B. Yeats to the Reids between 1946 and 1957, with each of the five cards bearing an original ink drawing by Yeats. Another twenty letters were written by Frederick B. Reid to his wife Eleanor, during and following his 1954 trip to Ireland. Finally, the collection includes two letters to a Mr. McLoughlin, one from Jack B. Yeats and the other from Yeats's wife Cottie.

Abstract:Tram Combs (Elisha Trammell, Jr.), born September 25, 1924, in Riverview, Alabama, was the son of Elisha Trammel Combs, a cotton mill superintendent. The collection consists of correspondence between Tram[...] Combs and John Malcolm Brinnin, Bill Read, and Frank Collymore. Each section of correspondence consists of the original letters from Brinnin, Read, or Collymore to Combs and carbon copies of Tram Combs' letters in response. Also included in this collection are a number of typescript carbons of poems written by Combs and sent to Brinnin or Collymore. The Brinnin section also contains clippings sent by Brinnin and a typescript inscribed copy of Brinnin's poem, "Skin Diving in the Virgins," which he dedicated to Combs.
