Abstract:This diary documents the 1865 journey of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, resident Louis Billing to England, where he visited relatives. He stayed with the family of his cousin William Mansell and other[...] Billing relatives. Short trips were taken to other destinations in the United Kingdom and two months were spent in France. Billing commented on his relatives and ancestral history, described architecture and cathedrals, and made strongly patriotic comparisons between England and America. Billing served in the Union Army and mentioned English interest in the politics of abolition.

Abstract:John Woolf Jordan (1840-1921) was a Philadelphia historian specializing in genealogies and personal histories, especially those of Pennsylvania families. This scrapbook comprises a single volume containing clippings of John W.[...] Jordan's travel narrative, "Random Notes of a Week's Visit to England" from an unknown publication; also included are picture postcards and photographic illustrations of the ships on which he traveled and locations he visited, several of which are accompanied by handwritten annotations. The notes detail Jordan's sea voyage to and from England and his experiences exploring the counties of London, Surrey, and Sussex. Jordan's voyage took place between July 8 and August 6, 1911.

The collection, which illuminates Oliver's activities as a collector and bibliographer, includes publications that printed original versions of the storyline, as well as various derivative works based on the novel; extensive bibliographies of editions of Dickens's works and scholarly work on Dickensiana, with a focus on Edwin Drood; and travel information and souvenirs from Dickens-related landmarks and events.

Abstract:Richard Champney’s memoir, which he entitled in full "Journal of Travels commencing from the year 1798, through various parts, of England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, Canada, United-States of North[...] America, Denmark, Germany, Holland, & the Netherlands. &c. by Richard Champney," was handwritten in four bound volumes and are a polished and edited version of daily journals kept by Richard Champney and his parents. The journals detail Champney's childhood journey from London, England, to Lexington, Kentucky, where his father had acquired property in settlement of a debt and the five-year struggle to live there. The journals describe Champney's return to England and subsequent education, career as a sailor on a merchant vessel, as well as his enlistment in the militia and service in Wellington's Peninsular Campaign during the Napoleonic Wars.
