Abstract:The George Handy Papers, 1845-1871 (bulk 1846-1850), comprises 273 letters and business documents from a prominent Philadelphia-based nineteenth-century merchant. The collection, as a whole, reflects social and personal relations with[...] Handy family members in Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Mississippi, as well as other friends; and business and economic affairs of domestic and foreign commerce, much of which was conducted by shipping through the ports of Philadelphia and New Orleans, or via the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

Abstract:American clergyman, biographer, and autograph collector William Buell Sprague was born in Hebron, Connecticut, on October 16, 1795. Two subjects, collecting autographs and compiling his Annals of the American Pulpit,[...] dominate the seventeen letters written by William Buell Sprague in this collection. In his letters written to several clergy, Sprague solicits information on Protestant ministers who are to be profiled in Annals. In his letters to friends or acquaintances, he discusses his collection of autographs. In some cases he actually sends a coveted autograph and in other cases he offers to examine documents in an attempt to authenticate the author. Written between 1836 and 1874, these letters convey Sprague's passion for both his vocation, ministry, and his avocation, autograph collecting.

Abstract:The James C. Booth papers consist of an extensive collection of Booth's personal, professional, and family papers. Included is a large collection of incoming and outgoing correspondence with colleagues[...] in the chemistry and geology professions; substantial correspondence with family members, notably his mother, Ann Bolton Booth, and his wife Margaret M. "Rettie" Booth; and extensive correspondence with and concerning professional and charitable organizations. Booth's work as a chemical consultant and assayer, as well as his work as Chief Melter and Refiner at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, is documented in correspondence and documents. A collection of James Booth's journals and notebooks, including his survey notes taken during the 1838 Delaware Geological Survey, are also present.

Abstract:The Roop-Rogers Family Papers consist of letters as well as miscellaneous documents and ephemera. The correspondence was exchanged between family members who were centered in the Seaford-Laurel area of Delaware[...] and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The main recipients are the Bradley sisters, Jane Bradley Rogers and Susannah Bradley Roop. Their correspondents included their children, siblings, cousins, and aunts; and Susannah's husband, Dr. F.A. Roop and her mother-in-law, Marie J. Roop. Most letters in the collection contain family news but there are also some political and religious discussions.

He was born in East Bradford, Chester County, Pennsylvania, to a Quaker family descended from Philip Price, an early[...] Pennsylvania settler. The Eli K. Price papers consist of two linear feet of legal material. Price was a leading Philadelphia real estate lawyer, a fact reflected in the collection. The collection is divided into three series. Series I covers Price’s correspondence; series II contains material from his law office; series III consists of materials from Price’s activities outside his legal practice.

Abstract:Militia documents relating to Ralph Haskins, member of the Boston Hussars, a militia group formed in New England during the War of 1812, including a booklet titled, Rules and Regulations[...] of the Boston Hussars. Instituted November 20, 1810., six newspaper articles from the Boston Daily Advertiser, and three autograph appointments of Haskins to Sergeant (1811), Cornet (1814), and Lieutenant (1816). Other materials consist of financial autograph accounts of military and uniform related expenditures, all dating from 1803 to 1879.

Abstract:This journal, named after the forecastle or upper forward deck of a sailing ship, was kept by American sailor Archibald Wilson during the period 1842-1843 and documents five trips taken[...] while serving aboard the ships James Edwards, Pioneer of Alexandria, and James Perkins. The journal entries document meteorological conditions, events of the day, duties performed aboard the ship, Wilson's thoughts and mood, and his interest in literature. Clippings from an 1883 issue of the magazine Harper's Weekly are also pasted into the volume.
