Abstract:This nineteenth-century children's scrapbook bears the title "ALBUM" in blue letters with additional black and gold stamping on the maroon cloth cover. The scrapbook, which is completely filled with carefully[...] placed images throughout, features collectible, die-cut, color scraps from sets of flowers, cats, dogs, birds, butterflies, insects, reptiles, children, cherubs, cartoonish faces, comic figures, and fashionable women and characters in ethnic dress. The album also includes holiday greeting cards and one photograph of two boys on a page about eight leaves from the back of the volume.

Abstract:This nineteenth-century scrap album, apparently compiled by a British child named "Fred," contains colorful scraps of animals, children, British sailors in uniform, rowers, flowers, birds, and other decorative items. There[...] are also a number of small printed images, Bible verses, and Christmas, New Year's, Easter, and birthday greeting cards. The cover of this album is embossed black and gold on red cloth in a Japonesque design of the Aesthetic Movement.

Abstract:William Stuart Auchincloss (1842-1928) was the son of John Auchincloss (1810-1876), a prominent New York dry goods merchant. John Auchincloss was in partnership with his brother under the business[...] name John and Hugh Auchincloss; they built upon the firm established by their own father, who had come to American as an agent for the family manufacturing business in Paisley, Scotland. This one-volume scrapbook, with contents spanning 1862-1892, includes correspondence, maps, tickets, papers, photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, advertisements, and drawings; and was largely assembled from the professional activities of William S. Auchincloss. Evidence within the scrapbook points to the wide range of interests that captured the attention of Auchincloss, a civil and mechanical engineer, originally from New York who later resided in Wilmington, Delaware, and in Philadelphia.

Abstract:Robert C. Fraim was born in 1830 at Brandywine Hundred in Delaware. He served as First Sergeant in Company D of the Fifth Delaware Regiment[...] during the Civil War. Following the war, he was appointed Registrar of Wills for New Castle County and was admitted to the New Castle County Bar. The bulk of his career was spent as an attorney in Wilmington. In addition to his professional activities, Fraim wrote poetry and articles for Philadelphia and Wilmington newspapers, typically publishing under the pseudonyms “Lex,” “Robin Hood,” and “Isaker Thompson.” In 1873, Fraim began to collect his poems and articles in a quarto volume, which he titled “Poetical Writings.” The majority of the writings are in holograph copies, though the volume includes several pasted-in newspaper clippings. The volume covers work from 1873 through 1901. In addition to poetry, the collection includes a manuscript “Family History” of the Fraim family, and newspaper clippings of the obituary notices for both Fraim and his wife, Eliza, among other items. There is also an estate inventory.

Abstract:This eclectically compiled nineteenth-century British scrapbook features collectible scraps of flowers, animals, children, birds, and work scenes; greeting cards; original ink, graphite, and watercolor artwork; material related to British royalty;[...] scenes of famous British places and buildings; and numerous images from varied sources. Several items depict "exotic ethnics," such as a black woman, an "Indian," "Orientals," and "Arabs." Not all of the 36 leaves in this album are filled: the first 23 are filled, perhaps by a young woman or teenage girl; the last two leaves are filled with five color printed images of British trains cut from Boys Own Paper, suggesting perhaps a brother or son is responsible for those images in the album.

Abstract:Under direction of the Secretary of the Treasury, the United States Light-House Board* was created in 1852. The purpose of the board was to oversee[...] the United States Light-House Establishment, a body created in 1789 to manage the twelve colonial lighthouses that were then in existence along the eastern seaboard, as well as to oversee construction of new structures. The U.S. Light-House Establishment Collection concerns the construction and maintenance of lighthouses located in the Fourth Light-House District around the Delaware Bay. The collection, spanning the period 1875-1912, comprises 1.5 linear feet and oversize material, and includes contracts, bids, correspondence, plans, a logbook, and an account book. The bulk of the items in the collection are bid and contract packets for various work projects in the Fourth Light-House District.
