Abstract:Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet W.D. (William De Witt) Snodgrass (1926-2009) wrote 58 letters between 1944 and 1946 to his then-fiancée Lila Jean Hank after being drafted into the United States[...] Navy and stationed in Saipan. The letters described life on the naval base at the end of World War II and a long, anxious period of demobilization in the Pacific. Snodgrass was one of the early practitioners of the confessional style in American poetry with his first volume Heart's Needle (1959) written after his divorce from Hank in 1953 and inspired by the subsequent estrangement from their daughter.

Included are handwritten correspondence exchanged by the married couple while George Murray was stationed at Army Air Force bases on the continental United States and in Europe, illustrating life both at home and abroad during wartime. The collection also features photographs, Air Force Technical School study guides, informational pamphlets, and other items collected by George during his time in the military as well as greeting cards from family and friends, and postcards/souvenirs from travel.

Abstract:Comprising two linear feet, this collection of World War II Maps and Radio Broadcasts primarily consists of material collected by Emily C. Stump, a Wilmington, Delaware, area resident employed by[...] the Hercules Powder Company. Hercules operated government-owned munitions plants during the War and also pursued development of other war-related products. As an executive secretary at Hercules, Mrs. Stump compiled for the company briefing notebooks of newspaper clippings which tracked military progress of Allied and Axis powers throughout World War II, among other items. She also collected transcripts of daily radio news broadcasts from stations WOR and WDEL. A gift from the Stump family, this collection also includes several military manuals which belonged to Emily Stump's husband, E. Charles Stump, III, a lieutenant in the Personal Affairs Office of the Army Air Forces. The collection is organized in three series: I. Maps and News Clippings, II. Radio Broadcasts, and III. Personal Affairs Office Manuals.

Abstract:English calligrapher and illuminator William Graily Hewitt was born on July 20, 1864, in London. After a brief writing career, Graily Hewitt began studying manuscripts and experimenting with calligraphy. He[...] became acquainted with the noted bookbinder Sydney Cockerell, who encouraged him to study with the noted calligrapher Edward Johnston. The 39 letters in this collection from English calligrapher and illuminator William Graily Hewitt to American book designer Sidney Feinberg, were written between 1944 and 1952. The correspondence was initiated by Feinberg when he was serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army and stationed in Great Britain during World War II. Feinberg's request for advice about his handwriting and his expression of interest in calligraphy and printing launched a friendship and correspondence with Hewitt which lasted until Hewitt's death in 1952.

Abstract:Dr. Charles Humberd of Barnard, Missouri, was a collector of dime novels active in the 1930s and 1940s. He was a mail-order customer of dime[...] novel dealers including Brooklyn-based Charles Bragin. Bragin wrote and published >Dime Novels Bibliography, 1860-1928. This small collection includes promotional material and correspondence relating to Dr. Humberd's purchase and collection of dime novels. The majority of the material concerns Dr. Humberd's business with Charles Bragin. In addition to the Bragin material, there are nine items documenting Humberd's transactions with other dime novel dealers and collectors. The collection includes a typescript "first edition" as well as a printed copy of Charles Bragin's Dime Novels Bibliography, 1860-1928 (1938).
