Abstract:Paul Frederic Bowles was born in New York City on December 30, 1910. Since the 1940s, Bowles has written numerous works of fiction, essays, translations, travel writing, poems, and other[...] works. Among Bowles's best-known fictional works are the novels The Sheltering Sky (1949), Let It Come Down (1952), The Spider's House (1955); and his initial short story collection, The Delicate Prey and Other Stories (1950). Paul Bowles has also had a prominent career as a composer. He studied with both Aaron Copland and Virgil Thomson, and during the 1930s and 1940s became one of the pre-eminent composers of American theater music. Paul Bowles letters to John Martin consist of a substantial group of eighty-four letters written by Paul Bowles to John Martin, plus a copy of Bowles' manuscript for Points in Time. Eight letters from Mohammed Mrabet to Martin (as translated and typed by Bowles), as well as copies of Bowles' English translations of Mrabet's play, Earth, and novella, Marriage With Papers are also available in this collection.

Abstract:American poet Cid (Sidney) Corman was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 29, 1924. Corman went on to found and edit the literary quarterly Origin, which published the work of[...] new or little-known authors, in addition to studying in several international locations and creating his own poetry. The collection of Corman's letters to fellow poet David Giannini contains 173 items and consist primarily of autograph postcards, and to a lesser extent, typed letters on aerogrammes. Corman writes all his letters from Kyoto, and many contain brief descriptions of Japanese life and surroundings. In addition, most of the postcards contain pictures of Kyoto, some of them near Corman's residence. Corman writes of his opinion of and experiences with the "Lang Gang," his name for language poets such as Susan Howe and Ron Silliman. He also writes about his own poetry; during this period, Corman is composing and publishing Of, a single work of 3,750 poems divided into five volumes of equal length.

Abstract:Poet and biographer John Malcolm Brinnin was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on September 13, 1916. Brinnin, who was also a critic, anthologist, and teacher,[...] taught at Vassar, Boston University, the University of Connecticut, and Harvard. Brinnin was the first person to bring Welsh poet Dylan Thomas to the United States and was responsible for all of Dylan Thomas's reading tours in this country. John Malcolm Brinnin Letters to John Matthew O’Shea consists of fifty-four letters written by Brinnin, between 1977 and 1991, to his friend John O’Shea, who was a companion to Truman Capote during the 1970s. When the first letters available in this collection were written, Brinnin was coping with the illness of his long-time friend Bill Read, who died in June 19, 1978. In his letters Brinnin reflected on his situation and inquired about O’Shea’s life with his friend Truman Capote.This collection complements thirteen letters written by John O’Shea to Brinnin, which are available in the John Malcolm Brinnin Papers (Ms 103).

Abstract:Thomas R. Carper (1947- ) served the state of Delaware as its member-at-large in the U.S. House of Representatives for five terms: he was elected as a Democrat to the[...] Ninety-eighth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1983 - January 3, 1993). Carper served on the committees of Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs, and Merchant Marine and Fisheries, with memberships on several subcommittees. Carper was elected with the "budget conscious class of 1982" and was a fiscal conservative in his legislative efforts. Carper worked on the bailout plan for the savings and loan industry, correctly predicting the enormity of the problem. The Thomas R. Carper congressional pPapers reflect issues on banking, environmental and coastal concerns, fishing and tourism, and many other topics of interest to Delawareans in the 1980s. In addition to correspondence, memoranda, and office files, the collection includes reports, documents, and memorabilia from Carper's congressional career.

Abstract:The British poet Elizabeth Jennings, born on July 18, 1926, in Boston, Lincolnshire, has published more than 20 books of poetry since the 1950s. She constructed short, meditative lyrics that[...] are known for their simplicity, control, and range of feeling. This collection of Elizabeth Jennings's poetry manuscripts is composed of seven notebooks and three folios which contain over 260 autograph poems, as well as one letter to Jennings from Stephen Spender. In addition to poems, the notebooks contain some personal and financial notes made by Jennings and several prose pieces. The prose include as essay on G. K. Chesterton, another piece on Ruth Pitter, and a piece titled "Relative Failures."
