Founded in the 1880s, the Bengal Paper Mill Company was a major exporter of Indian paper during the early 20th century. It was originally established by the British business community in Calcutta and was managed by Balmer Lawrie & Company in its early years. World prices for paper were high at the company's inception and the prospects for Indian papermaking were promising. Bengal flourished in its early years but saw some decline as cheap wood pulp became available worldwide in the early 20th century.
