Biographical and Historical Notes

Anna Elizabeth Beebe was born [circa 1898] in Lewes, Delaware, to a prominent Lewes family. Her brothers, Dr. James Beebe, Sr. and Dr. Richard C. Beebe, founded the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes in 1916.

Anna Beebe was educated at the Women's College of Delaware, from which she received her bachelor's degree. She also obtained a master's degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Anna Beebe began her career as an educator with teaching positions in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In approximately 1933 Beebe returned to Lewes to take a position as an English teacher at Lewes High School. She remained at Lewes High as a teacher and guidance counselor for thirty-three years; she retired in 1966. Elizabeth Beebe died in December 1990.

Scope and Content Note

The Anna Beebe Papers consist of a collection of letters written to Anna Beebe during the period 1906-1919.

Beebe's primary correspondents are members of her family, school friends, and acquaintances. The letters typically discuss social events, personal affairs, school activities, and family news. Of particular interest are the copies of letters from her brother, Dr. Richard Beebe, during his service as a medical officer in Europe with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. (Note: original letters were transferred to the Historical Society of Delaware at the request of the donor).

The collection is arranged in chronological order with three folders of undated material housed at the end.
