Abstract: Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (b. 1942) was elected by Delawareans as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1972 and reelected in 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, 2002, and again in 2008. He served in the Senate from January 3, 1973, until January 15, 2009, when he resigned after being elected on the 2008 presidential Democratic ticket headed by Barack Obama to become Vice President of the United States. Senator Biden served as chair of the Committee on the Judiciary (One Hundredth through One Hundred Third Congresses, 1987-1995) and chair of the Committee on Foreign Relations (One Hundred Seventh Congress, One Hundred Tenth Congress, 2001-2003 and 2007-2009).
