Graduate teaching assistants, new ENGL110 instructors, and instructors with special source requirements can request an in-person, librarian-led class session using the directions below.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.lib.udel.edu\/prf.php?account_id=82457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lauren Wallis<\/a> with questions.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting Started with Research Tutorial<\/h2>\n<p>Students navigate an example research process in a &#8220;choose your own adventure&#8221; interface. The tutorial covers topic development, search strategies in DELCAT and databases, and evaluating source relevance for a topic. Activities emphasize the cyclical (sometimes frustrating) nature of the research process and support students in developing confidence and a flexible mindset toward academic research.<\/p>\n<p>After students complete this tutorial, they can use the research log assignment (coming soon) to apply their learning to their own research topic. Students will develop keywords, complete background research as needed, search in DELCAT and a database, and identify a few potentially relevant sources for their research topic. Students can complete the research log on their own, during class time, or during an open research workshop at the library (more info below).<\/p>\n<h2>Engaging with Scholarly Sources Tutorial<\/h2>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MailCompose\">Through interviews with two UD faculty members, this tutorial helps students understand how scholarly conversations take place in both informal and formal ways. It also addresses how scholarly sources are created and used. Students will use example publications by UD faculty to practice identifying common components of scholarly publications, including surface-level markers such as author credentials and in-text representations of scholarly conversations such as literature reviews.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to Use the Tutorials in Your Courses<\/h2>\n<h3>Student Access<\/h3>\n<p>Provide the following links for students to access the tutorials.<\/p>\n<p>Getting Started with Research Tutorial (required): <a id=\"OWAb2d5b333-f57b-63cd-b09f-c1043be983d7\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/guides.lib.udel.edu\/engl110\/researchtutorial\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">https:\/\/guides.lib.udel.edu\/engl110\/researchtutorial<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Engaging with Scholarly Sources Tutorial (optional): <a id=\"OWA6c0c7ec5-26df-4ebf-d5b4-03edf57e4819\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/guides.lib.udel.edu\/engl110\/sourcetutorial\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">https:\/\/guides.lib.udel.edu\/engl110\/sourcetutorial<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Giving Credit for Tutorial Completion<\/h3>\n<p>You can choose how to give a completion grade for the tutorials. When students complete a tutorial, they will automatically receive an email with all of their answers. You can create a Canvas assignment for students to upload a pdf of the email or copy and paste the entire content of the email.<\/p>\n<h3>When to Assign the Tutorials<\/h3>\n<p><em>Getting Started with Research<\/em> can be assigned at the very beginning of your research assignment, before students have chosen their own topic. The tutorial launch page includes an optional Research Log that you can assign as-is or with your own modifications to guide students through the research process with their own topic.\u00a0<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Engaging with Scholarly Sources <\/i>can be assigned prior to the research assignment to introduce students to the idea of scholarly conversation and scholarly sources, or in conjunction with the research assignment.<\/p>\n<h2>Class Sessions for Graduate TAs and New Instructors<\/h2>\n<p>We will continue to offer a librarian-led class session for graduate teaching assistants and new instructors. Please use the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.udel.edu\/teaching-and-learning\/for-faculty\/usered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instruction request form<\/a> to request a session.
