Library Student Assistant Scholarship


The UDLAPS Library Student Assistant Scholarship was established in 1996. It is intended to reward outstanding student service at the University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press and make a positive contribution to the profession of librarianship and allied professions. The scholarship encourages student assistants and graduate assistants who have worked in the University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press to pursue careers as information professionals. Because student and graduate employees are so essential to the daily operations of the Library, Museums & Press, the scholarship program also serves as a means of recognition. In addition, employment in the Library, Museums & Press provides student assistants and graduate assistants a valuable introduction to the field of information sciences. The scholarship program offers support in the pursuit of graduate education to student assistants and graduate assistants who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to librarianship and allied professions.

Eligibility to Apply

Applicants must be current or former student assistants or graduate assistants who have worked at the University of Delaware Library at least one semester (a minimum of 150 hours). Applicants must have applied for admission to a formal program of library and information studies leading to an ALA-accredited master’s degree, or an equivalent degree in an allied profession including, but not limited to, museums, publishing, information science, and digital humanities. Applicants must provide documentation of a 3.0 GPA or better at the University of Delaware, and will address how the degree program in their application essays relate to their goal of working in libraries, museums, or publishing.

Applications

Applicants will be required to submit the following: 1) A completed application form; 2) a letter stating reasons for interest in becoming a librarian or information professional; 3) two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a University of Delaware Library staff member addressing current or previous experience as a University of Delaware Library student assistant or graduate assistant; 4) a letter showing proof of application or acceptance to an ALA-accredited graduate library education program or equivalent graduate education program in an allied field; and 5) evidence of a 3.0 GPA or better.

Awards

One scholarship of $1000 is available annually. If there are no qualified applicants, no award will be given.

Contributions

The UDLAPS Student Assistant Scholarship is funded exclusively by contributions from University of Delaware Library Staff. Advancing this worthy cause requires continued financial support. Those who would like to give to the scholarship should send the Student Assistant Scholarship Contribution Form, along with their tax-deductible contributions, to the UDLAPS Secretary/Treasurer. Checks should be made payable to the University of Delaware, noting on the memo line: “UDLAPS Scholarship Fund.”
