Library, Museums & Press Student Assistant Scholarship


The UDLAPS Library, Museums & Press Student Assistant Scholarship was established in 1996 to reward outstanding student service at the University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press and to make a positive contribution to the library science and allied professions.

The scholarship encourages student and graduate assistants who have worked in the University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press to pursue careers in library and information science, museum studies, art history, and publishing. Employment in the Library, Museums & Press provides student and graduate assistants a valuable introduction to librarianship, information sciences, museum studies and publishing.

Because student and graduate employees are so essential to the daily operations of the Library, Museums & Press, the scholarship program also serves as a means of recognizing outstanding student employees’ work and leadership potential, as well as supporting their pursuits of graduate education in librarianship or an allied profession.

The UDLAPS Library Student Assistant Scholarship was established in 1996. It is intended to reward outstanding student service at the University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press and make a positive contribution to the profession of librarianship and allied professions. The scholarship encourages student assistants and graduate assistants who have worked in the University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press to pursue careers as information professionals. Because student and graduate employees are so essential to the daily operations of the Library, Museums & Press, the scholarship program also serves as a means of recognition. In addition, employment in the Library, Museums & Press provides student assistants and graduate assistants a valuable introduction to the field of information sciences. The scholarship program offers support in the pursuit of graduate education to student assistants and graduate assistants who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to librarianship and allied professions.

Award

One scholarship of $1,000 is available annually to a single student or graduate assistant. If there are no applicants, no award will be given.

Scholarship Eligibility

Applicants must be current or former student assistants or graduate assistants who have worked at the University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press at least one semester (a minimum of 150 hours).

Applicants must have applied to an ALA-accredited library science or information studies master’s program, or an accredited program in an allied profession, including, but not limited to, museums, art history, publishing, information science or digital humanities.

Applicants must provide documentation of a 3.0 GPA or better at the University of Delaware, and will need to address how the degree program relates to their goal of working in libraries, museums or publishing.

Applications

Applicants MUST submit the following:

  1. A completed application form;
  2. A letter stating reasons for interest in becoming a librarian or allied professional;
  3. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press staff member addressing the applicant’s current or previous experience as a student or graduate assistant;
  4. Proof of application or acceptance to an ALA-accredited graduate library program or equivalent graduate program in an allied field; and
  5. Evidence of a 3.0 GPA or higher.

NOTE: The scholarship recipient will need to submit proof of enrollment in his or her graduate program to the Student Scholarship Committee prior to the award’s disbursement.

Contributions

The UDLAPS Student Assistant Scholarship is funded exclusively by contributions from University of Delaware Library, Museums & Press Staff.

Advancing this worthy cause requires continued financial support. Those who would like to give to the scholarship should send the Student Assistant Scholarship Contribution Form, along with their tax-deductible contributions, to the UDLAPS Secretary/Treasurer. Checks should be made payable to the University of Delaware, noting on the memo line: “UDLAPS Scholarship Fund.”
