Materials in the collection span over more than a century from 1800 to 1926. The bulk of the material in the collection is from the period 1820-1920. The collection preserves a variety of genres including correspondence, essays, speeches, contracts, estate inventories, ledgers, financial journals, and checks.

Abstract:The five members of the Philadelphia Gratz family who have documents in this collection are Hyman Gratz (1776-1857), Simon Gratz (b. 1773), Joseph Gratz (1785-1857), Henry S. Gratz (1859-1922), and[...] Alfred Gratz (1855-1938). Hyman, Simon, and Joseph Gratz were brothers, born to the prominent Philadelphia merchant, Michael Gratz. Their sister, Rebecca Gratz, was the prototype of the heroine in Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe and a noted Philadelphia philanthropist. The three brothers, who fought in the War of 1812, were prominent Philadelphians as successful merchants and financiers, and as patrons of the arts and leaders in the Jewish community. Although the Alfred Gratz Family Papers span the dates 1802-1894 (bulk dates 1880-1892) and include documents related to five members of the Gratz family, the papers chiefly are comprised of correspondence and documents generated during the initial years following Alfred Gratz's election as Register of Wills for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1888. In addition to .5 linear feet of correspondence and documents related to Alfred Gratz, the papers include ten documents related to Hyman Gratz, Simon Gratz, Joseph Gratz, and Henry S. Gratz. The documents include receipts, deeds, a stock certificate, a membership certificate, letters, and a bond of indemnity. A description of each of these items is included in the series notes.

Abstract:Irish Theatre Journals is a collection of six bound volumes of clippings, programs, articles, and autograph notes regarding theater in Dublin, Ireland. Loose pages of [...] notes, and clippings, also related to Irish theater, complete the collection. he scrapbook/journals comprise a collection of research material, possibly for a book or articles on the history of theater in Dublin. Several of the journals contain autograph transcriptions of theater flyers or programs from the Theatre Royal Dublin (1868-1879), Gaiety Theatre (1871-1884), and Fishamble Street Theatre (1793). These transcriptions, 1868-1884, include titles of plays or musicals performed, lists of cast, dates and times for performances, and any other stage information given on the original item. The transcribed original theater programs and flyers provide rare information regarding performances at several Dublin theaters.

Abstract:James Hossinger was born in 1838 and was a resident of Newark, Delaware, Hossinger was a farmer for most of his life. He also took an active interest in[...] public service, serving as a trustee on the board of Delaware College, treasurer for the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Newark, treasurer for the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, treasurer for Newark Real Estate Company, and president of the National Bank of Newark. The James Hossinger Papers consist of correspondence, legal documents, estate papers, receipts, and bills of this prominent resident of late nineteenth-century Newark, Delaware. Hossinger was either a signatory or a witness for the majority of legal documents included in the collection. The earliest document in the collection is a 1790 indenture between John Stockton and David Clark for a parcel of land located in White Clay Creek Hundred. The estates represented in the collection were either held in trust by Hossinger or ones in which he acted as executor, including the estate of his father Joseph.
