Abstract:Edward William Martin was born on November 2, 1891, in Inverarnan, Scotland. His family moved to Delaware when he was a child, and he attended Wilmington High School and[...] the University of Delaware. Martin was a well-respected architect in Delaware, and worked on a large number of projects for schools, hospitals, government buildings, and private residences. Martin also participated in the Depression-era Historic American Buildings Survey project (HABS), initiated by the historic architects of the National Park Service. The E. William Martin collection contains sketches and watercolors, blueprints, floor plans, photographs, maps, brochures, and various other architectural drawings. Series I contains sketches from his study tours around Paris and Italy and his speech given to the Liverpool Architectural Society following these tours; Series II contains drawings, blueprints, and floor plans from his projects; and Series III contains miscellaneous items, such as letters, a speech, and other memorabilia, brochures, photographs, and Newark (Delaware) maps. This collection by no means contains the complete output of Martin's five decades of work as either a student or professional architect, but it does provide a good idea of the diversity and level of his talents.

Abstract:Publisher Richard Cobden Sanderson was the son of British bookbinder and printer Thomas James Cobden. In 1919, Richard Cobden Sanderson established himself as a publisher, with partners Kenneth Rae and[...] Boofie Gore (later Lord Arran). From his office at Thavies Inn, Holborn, Cobden Sanderson earned a reputation for publishing books noted for the quality of their content and presentation. The letters to Richard Cobden Sanderson consist of over 375 letters (.6 linear feet), several documents, and a prospectus for Cobden Sanderson's publication, The Annual. Although most of the letters are addressed to Richard Cobden Sanderson, some are written to his wife Gwladys (Sally), and certainly most refer to her. The letters reflect the deep friendships formed between the Cobden Sandersons and their acquaintances and publishing associates. Letters written during World War II offer vivid and detailed accounts of life in Great Britain during the war, i.e. the bombing of London, the displacement of families, rationing, the necessity for vegetable gardening and livestock management by anyone with land, the loss of friends and family, work at the Ministry of Information, among other topics.

Abstract:Kay Boyle, born in 1902, is best known for her work and accomplishments as a poet, short story writer, novelist, journalist, teacher, and political activist. One of the prominent American[...] expatriates during the 1920s and 1930s, much of Kay Boyle's work reflects the influences of that literary circle. The Kay Boyle papers relating to research on Irish women consist of 2.3 linear feet of material. The papers include notebooks, letters, books, periodicals, clippings, photographs, drafts, poems, calendars, a reel-to-reel tape, and pamphlets. Three-quarters of the papers relate to research completed by Kay Boyle for a book on Irish women. Kay Boyle was very interested in the struggles which women faced throughout history in their attempts to achieve civil and economic rights. That interest, in addition to curiosity about the Boyle family ancestry in Ireland and concern for a peaceful settlement of troubles in Northern Ireland, brought her to Ireland in 1976 to begin research for a book about the women of Ireland.

Colish founded by press in 1907,[...] specializing in advertising typography and bythe late 1920s, it was producing fine printing jobs as well as advertising. The Press of A. Colish Archive consists of five linear feet of material, as well as five oversize boxes. The archive includes correspondence, galley and page proofs, drafts, notes, photographs, negatives, illustrations, advertisements, clippings, broadsides, books, chapbooks, printing journals, typography specimens, financial documents, and ephemera. The collection is divided into six series: I. History and Information, II. Print Jobs from the Press of A. Colish, III. Collaborations, IV. Printing and Publishing Materials, V. Personal Documents, and IV. Photographs.

Abstract:Futurism, a twentieth-century movement founded by the Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (1876-1944), embraced literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, and music. Marinetti called for a new art form that would reflect[...] contemporary living conditions and break with the aesthetic traditions of the nineteenth century. The Futurism collection consists of notes, clippings, and essays compiled by Luigi Scrivo and P. Bellanova for their proposed history of Futurism, "Volgarizzazione del Futurismo." The bulk of the material in this collection is written in Italian. Included are five different plans for the work; the manuscripts of approximately eight essays; five collections of statements from Mussolini, Ezra Pound, and others; numerous clippings; tear sheets from "Il Libro Italiano;" and an annotated Marinetti bibliography.

Johnson, who founded the Newark Post in 1910, was a Secretary of State for[...] Delaware, an alumnus and member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Delaware, a gentleman farmer, and a journalist and printer. The press was named after the Irish monastery which produced the Book of Kells in the seventh century.This small collection consists of documents, ephemera, and clippings relating to Everett C. Johnson and the Press of Kells. Special Collections holds additional publications of the Kells Press which are cataloged in the printed collections.

In 1876, Bleecker Van Wagenen became a partner and the[...] name was changed to its final form, Dodd, Mead and Company. The Dodd, Mead and Company Archive consists of two linear feet of material. The archive is comprised of correspondence, contracts, photographs, wills, probate documents, biographies, drafts, notes, copyright documents, poems, printed programs, ephemera, and clippings. This selection of the company files details the business arrangements between the publisher and various Black American authors. Authors included in this collection are Arna Wendell Bontemps, Benjamin Brawley, Orde Coombs, Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Alan Lomax, and Raoul Abdul. The University of Delaware Library holds only a small portion of the Dodd Mead Archives. The University of Delaware Library does not have any information regarding disposition of the remainder of the archive.

Abstract:English journalist and editor Clement King Shorter was born in London, at Southwark, on July 19, 1857. Shorter began his career in journalism in 1888,[...] writing a weekly column about books for the Star and working as a sub-editor for the Penny Illustrated Paper, later taking a turn as editor for a numbeer of different newspapers, including the Illustrated London News, The Sphere, and The Tatler, among others. In the early 1900s, Shorter's main interest had become collecting manuscripts, books, and ephemera related to his favorite authors. Shorter was a particularly avid collector of material related to the Brontës. Shorter's collection and research eventually developed into several books on the Brontës. Clement Shorter's published writing also included several volumes on Napoleon, two works on George Borrow, a volume of essays and addresses, and a fragment of his autobiography
