Abstract:Writer James T. Farrell was born in Chicago on February 27, 1904. This group of papers consists of manuscripts of critical essays by Farrell. It includes essays on such contemporary[...] authors as E. E. Cummings, William Faulkner, Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and Thomas Wolfe. Also included are several short comments on Farrell's own writing and a short unpublished fictional fragment from the Studs Lonigan trilogy. Accompanying the collections are ten letters from James T. Farrell to Walter Goldwater, the proprietor of University Place Bookshop (New York) who originally acquired the collection from Farrell.

Abstract:The British scholar Michael Millgate was born July 19, 1929, in Southampton, England. Millgate is Professor of English at the University of Toronto and has[...] received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Royal Society of Canada, and the Royal Society of Literature. He is the author of critical studies and biographies of Thomas Hardy and William Faulkner. The British writer, scientist, and public official C. P. (Charles Percy) Snow was born in Leicester, England, on October 15, 1905. Snow combined three careers during his lifetime, serving as a Civil Service commissioner (1945-1960) and parliamentary secretary (1964-1966); he was a physicist at Cambridge University (1930-1950); and he wrote novels, plays, and critical essays. The Michael Millgate-C. P. Snow collection spans the dates 1958 – 1964 and includes 42 items of correspondence, typescripts, periodicals, and news clippings related to Millgate’s 1962 interview with Snow. The collection comprises letters from Snow to Millgate, typescripts of an interview conducted by Millgate, publication correspondence between Millgate and his editors, and periodicals and news clippings related to Snow.

Abstract:Tram Combs (Elisha Trammell, Jr.), born September 25, 1924, in Riverview, Alabama, was the son of Elisha Trammel Combs, a cotton mill superintendent. The collection consists of correspondence between Tram[...] Combs and John Malcolm Brinnin, Bill Read, and Frank Collymore. Each section of correspondence consists of the original letters from Brinnin, Read, or Collymore to Combs and carbon copies of Tram Combs' letters in response. Also included in this collection are a number of typescript carbons of poems written by Combs and sent to Brinnin or Collymore. The Brinnin section also contains clippings sent by Brinnin and a typescript inscribed copy of Brinnin's poem, "Skin Diving in the Virgins," which he dedicated to Combs.

Abstract:Irish author, poet, and critic Thomas MacGreevy was born in 1893, in Tarbert, County Kerry. The twenty-four letters written by Thomas MacGreevy to Eleanor and Frederick Reid, between 1954 and[...] 1966, include seventy-eight pages of text and several enclosures. Although Thomas MacGreevy's early (1954) letters were dominated by his responses to the Reids's questions about Jack B. Yeats, as the correspondence continued, MacGreevy began to widen the scope of his discussions to include details about his family, his personal health, his strong religious beliefs as a Roman Catholic, his work at the National Gallery, his activities following his retirement, and reminiscences about his friendships with James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Wallace Stevens, and particularly, Jack B. Yeats.
