Abstract:Writer James T. Farrell was born in Chicago on February 27, 1904. This group of papers consists of manuscripts of critical essays by Farrell. It includes essays on such contemporary[...] authors as E. E. Cummings, William Faulkner, Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and Thomas Wolfe. Also included are several short comments on Farrell's own writing and a short unpublished fictional fragment from the Studs Lonigan trilogy. Accompanying the collections are ten letters from James T. Farrell to Walter Goldwater, the proprietor of University Place Bookshop (New York) who originally acquired the collection from Farrell.

Abstract:Born in Ohio in 1914, James Purdy is one of the United States' most prolific, yet little known writers. A novelist, poet, playwright[...] and amateur artist, Purdy has published over fifty volumes. The James Purdy Manuscript Collection spans the years 1961 to 1978 and contains three items: a short story, Everything Under the Sun; and two novels, I am Elijah Thrush, and Narrow Rooms. Everything Under the Sun and Narrow Rooms contain minor corrections by the author. The typescript of I am Elijah Thrush is perhaps most interesting from a scholarly standpoint because it contains extensive corrections and additions by the author.

Abstract:Irish author, poet, and critic Thomas MacGreevy was born in 1893, in Tarbert, County Kerry. The twenty-four letters written by Thomas MacGreevy to Eleanor and Frederick Reid, between 1954 and[...] 1966, include seventy-eight pages of text and several enclosures. Although Thomas MacGreevy's early (1954) letters were dominated by his responses to the Reids's questions about Jack B. Yeats, as the correspondence continued, MacGreevy began to widen the scope of his discussions to include details about his family, his personal health, his strong religious beliefs as a Roman Catholic, his work at the National Gallery, his activities following his retirement, and reminiscences about his friendships with James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Wallace Stevens, and particularly, Jack B. Yeats.

Abstract:The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), an organization formed in Great Britain in January 1958, intended to persuade the government to "renounce unconditionally the use or production of nuclear weapons[...] and refuse to allow their use by others in its defense." The records of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) contains three linear feet of material including articles, clippings, minutes and agendas from conferences, files, microfilm, and publications. The material surveys the issues of the nuclear disarmament movement in England beginning with the formation of the CND in 1958. Several contentious issues are documented throughout the collection.

Abstract:The Edgar Rice Burroughs comic book collection is an artificial collection of comic books inspired by the writings of Edgar Rice Burroughs, as published by Dell Publishing Co., Marvel Comics[...] Group, DC Comics, Western Publishing Company (Gold Key Comics), and others from 1953 to 1977. The character Tarzan is the primary focus of these comic books; a minority of the comics expand upon Burroughs's series of Mars novels. As examples of other Burroughs-inspired items, the collection also includes two records and a set of trading cards.
