Abstract:The David R. Clark Papers reflects the academic and publishing interests of the noted American Irish literary scholar, David R., Clark, and comprises one linear foot of correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper[...] clippings, publishers' announcements, photographs and ephemera. The collection includes correspondence with and reference material about many of Ireland's foremost poets, writers, and publishers, as well as many scholars of Irish literature and theater. Among those represented in this collection are Seamus Heaney, Denis Johnston, Thomas MacGreevy, Liam Miller, Frank O'Connor, and Mary O'Malley. Materials related to Nigerian author Chinua Achebe and his visiting professorship at the University of Massachusetts are also found in the collection. Scholars of Irish literature will find this collection particularly interesting, as it details the early careers of many of Ireland's now-established writers, including Richard Murphy, Richard Weber, and Alexander Hutchison.

Holzapfel has published with the Irish authors Brendan Kennelly, Oliver Snoddy, and John Farrell, and[...] his work has been anthologized in the Penguin Book of Irish Verse and Modern Irish Poets. The Rudi Holzapfel papers consist of approximately 40 poetry and prose manuscripts, most of which contain numerous autograph corrections and additions. Also included are approximately 30 miscellaneous personal items, including promotional material relating to his 1985-86 tour of the United States, material relating to his position as an English teacher in Germany, drafts of letters, photographs, and a personal notebook.

Abstract:Author, illustrator and calligrapher Fridolf Johnson (1905-1988) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and then remained in Illinois for nine years as art director for the Frankel-Rose Agency. After[...] ten years on the West Coast, Johnson left for New York in 1952 where he worked as a designer and professional calligrapher and became increasingly interested in printing and typography. From 1962 until 1970 Johnson was the executive editor of American Artist and contributed myriad book reviews and articles for the periodical. The Fridolf Johnson papers consist of ten linear feet of material related to Johnson’s career as a printer, calligrapher, and writer, spanning the dates 1950 to 1985, reflecting Johnson’s interest in lettering, italic handwriting, and the fine and graphic arts. It includes prolific correspondence, photographs, greeting cards, broadsides, prospectuses, printing ephemera, keepsakes, books, serials, clippings, articles, pamphlets, programs, exhibition announcements, catalogs, and bookplates.

Title:Letters from calligraphers to Sidney Feinberg and George Grady

Abstract:While stationed in England during World War II, American book designer and calligrapher Sidney Feinberg began his interest in calligraphy. Several of the letters in this collection are responses from[...] noted American or British calligraphers to Feinberg's inquiries about their work and how he might develop his calligraphic skills. George Grady founded the George Grady Press, a New York City firm which was noted for private and fine printing. This collection of letters written to Sidney Feinberg or George Grady was originally assembled in a notebook labeled "Calligraphic Letters." The fifty-nine letters and cards, spanning the dates 1938 to 1972, are fine examples of the handwriting employed by various noted calligraphers, printers, and graphic artists. Among the correspondence to Feinberg are original Christmas cards created, and in some cases printed, by the sender. Christmas greetings from calligraphers Lili Cassel-Wronker, Tony La Russa, James and Ruth McCrea, Oscar Ogg, and George Salter demonstrate their designs and calligraphy.The content of letters written to printer George Grady cover several topics, including book orders to J. M. Dent & Sons, Ltd. and Rampant Lion Press; Grady's effort to purchase stained glass windows with book arts themes; publications by the Society of Printers; and Paul Standard's suggestion to reprint Graily Hewitt's Handwriting.

Abstract:The Wivenhoe Park Review was a short-lived British journal of contemporary poetry, essays, and criticism edited by poets Andrew Crozier and Thomas Clark (an [...] American) beginning in 1965. It was originally published by the University of Essex Department of Literature, but with the third issue, Crozier shortened the name of the journal to The Park, and began to publish it at his own newly founded Ferry Press. The thirty-one items in this archive were collected by editor Andrew Crozier in the process of publishing the first issue of The Wivenhoe Park Review under its new title, The Park. The collection includes manuscripts of poems and essays, with letters of submission and follow-ups from the authors who contributed to The Park 1.

From 1954 until his retirement in 1981, he was professor of English and American Literature at Albion College in Albion, Michigan. The John E. Hart Collection regarding Albert Halper consists of correspondence relating to research and publication for Professor Hart’s essay “Albert Halper’s World of the Thirties” (Twentieth Century Literature, v. 9:4, January 1964), and his book, Albert Halper (1978), part of the Twayne United States Authors Series. The collection contains both original correspondence and other material from Halper, as well as the correspondence Hart conducted with a number of individuals and institutions in connection with his research.

Abstract:The National Society of the Children of the American Revolution (CAR) was founded in 1895 by Harriett Mulford Lothrop, in conjunction with the National Society[...] Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The mission and objectives of the CAR have remained consistent throughout its history, namely to train good citizens and engender patriotism through the honoring of Revolutionary War patriots, the study of American history, the promotion of patriotic holidays, and the preservation of Revolutionary-era places. In 1938, the Robert Kirkwood Society of the CAR was organized in Newark, Delaware. The Society was named for Robert Kirkwood, a Revolutionary War major from Mill Creek Hundred, Delaware. The Frazer Jones papers of the Robert Kirkwood Society, Children of the American Revolution consist of two linear feet of correspondence, clippings, official records, photographs, publications, ephemera, and other materials primarily related to Frazer Jones’s work in the CAR. The collection is arranged according to the organizational structure of the CAR, with separate series for material pertaining to the local, state, and national societies. Researchers should note, however, that much of the material in the state and national series remains relevant to the activities of the Robert Kirkwood Society. For example, members of the Robert Kirkwood Society presumably read and used the publications and letters produced by the National Society CAR that are grouped in Series III.
