Title:Eclectic nineteenth-century British scrapbook
Date(s):1865-1890
Call No:MSS 0093, Item 0029
Abstract:This eclectically compiled nineteenth-century British scrapbook features collectible scraps of flowers, animals, children, birds, and work scenes; greeting cards; original ink, graphite, and watercolor artwork; material related to British royalty;[...] scenes of famous British places and buildings; and numerous images from varied sources. Several items depict "exotic ethnics," such as a black woman, an "Indian," "Orientals," and "Arabs." Not all of the 36 leaves in this album are filled: the first 23 are filled, perhaps by a young woman or teenage girl; the last two leaves are filled with five color printed images of British trains cut from Boys Own Paper, suggesting perhaps a brother or son is responsible for those images in the album.

Creator:Wilson, Alexander
Title:Alexander Wilson papers
Date(s):1852-1890
Call No:MSS 0388
Abstract:The personal and business papers of Alexander Wilson, a manufacturer of agricultural machinery just below Newark in Pencader Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, [...] include letters, envelopes, brochures, receipts, checks, and ephemera. As a successful businessman in New Castle County, Delaware, Wilson was involved in county government. From evidence in the collection, Wilson was a Trustee of the Poor (1877), Secretary of School District 54, New Castle County (1875), and a commissioner of the New Castle County Levy Court. The correspondence concerns customer inquiries about the equipment that Wilson manufactured and responses to Wilson's own inquiries and orders from other manufacturers and retailers of parts and supplies. Most letters are very brief: acknowledging orders, requesting clarification of orders, and stating transportation arrangements with railroad companies, especially the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad, whose tracks lay not far from Wilson's plant. The strength of this collection lays in the advertising information presented on brochures, trade cards, and envelopes, which offer detailed information about agricultural machines, engines, parts, and tools, and often specify prices, sizes, and provide diagrams. Another strength of this collection lays in its record of a network of interdependent manufacturing concerns in the East and midwest, each producing goods necessary to the operation of the others.

Creator:Collins & Autenrieth
Title:Collins and Autenrieth architectural works
Date(s):1852-1904
Call No:MSS 0359
Abstract:Despite the prominence of the nineteenth-century Philadelphia architectural firm of Collins & Autenrieth, not much is known about the background of its two founding members. Edward Collins (1821-1902) was born[...] in Köningsberg, Prussia, and studied at universities in Karlsruhe and Berlin, two important architectural centers in Germany. While there, he became friends with Charles M. Autenrieth (1828-1906), who was born in Wurtenburg, and who was also a student of architecture. According to the records of his family, Collins came to Philadelphia in 1849, and it is likely that he persuaded Autenrieth to come with him. The work of Collins and Autenrieth was quite varied, designing buildings for both private individuals and civic institutions, and much of their work centered on the German immigrant community of Philadelphia. The Collins & Autenrieth architectural works collection covers the entire span of their partnership from 1854-1902 and contains 422 items, and includes elevations, floorplans, perspectives, renderings, sections, details, blueprints, and several notebooks. The collection at the University of Delaware contains only a portion of the extant works from the firm of Collins & Autenrieth. Nevertheless, the collection provides a good indication of the scope and quality of their work.
