Abstract:British poet, novelist, historian, and critic Julian Symons was born on May 30, 1912, in London, England. The Julian Symons papers consist of more than 400 manuscripts written by Julian[...] Symons and over 200 letters addressed to Symons (3 linear feet). Most of the collection relates to his work in the field of crime literature. Many of the manuscripts are autograph drafts of book reviews; however, also present are reviews of movies, television and radio programs, and theater productions; short stories; essays; poetry; material toward books and lectures; and correspondence. In addition to autograph drafts, the collection includes galley proofs, flyers, magazines, clippings, books, letters, and typescript drafts.

Abstract:American author Alfred Chester was born in Brooklyn on September 7, 1928. Chester won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1957, and his short stories were chosen for inclusion in Prize Stories[...] 1956: The O. Henry Awards and The Best American Short Stories of 1957. American poet and editor Edward Field was born in Brooklyn on June 7, 1924. Besides becoming an accomplished poet, Field has also edited anthologies of poetry and produced the narration for the documentary film To Be Alive, which won an Academy Award in 1965. Another of his literary endeavors has been to champion his friend Alfred Chester's works for reprint and to revive Chester's literary reputation. The Edward Field Alfred Chester Archives consists of four linear feet of correspondence, printed material, photos, paintings, and realia related to American author Alfred Chester collected by Field. The collection is divided into four series: correspondence, biographical material, works by Chester, and literary revival by Edward Field.

Abstract:American poet and editor Edward Field was born in Brooklyn on June 7, 1924. Besides becoming an accomplished poet, Field has also edited anthologies of poetry and produced the narration[...] for the documentary film To Be Alive, which won an Academy Award in 1965. The Edward Field Papers consist of twenty-one linear feet of Field's personal and literary papers which document his life and writing career from 1943-1994. The papers contain correspondence, photographs and negatives, poems, prose, book reviews, clippings, posters, programs, financial papers, address books, calendars, interviews, books, magazines and journals, flyers, plays, and ephemera. Although the majority of the collection records Field's work as a poet, his papers document all aspects of Field's writing, including his work as an editor, essayist, translator, narrator, collaborator on popular novels, and as a journal keeper.

Abstract:Pearl Herlihy Daniels (1910-1994) was born Pearl Glenn in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1949, she was appointed to a committee to modernize Wilmington’s city charter and[...] in the 1950s, she chaired Delaware’s State Labor Commission, which later became the State Labor Department. In the latter post, she fought to improve the working conditions of migrant laborers. Daniels was also an activist at the state level for stronger narcotics laws. On the national front, she was mainly involved in issues related to children. She was later appointed to national commissions by Preisdents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson. Besides her many political interests, Pearl Herlihy Daniels was also an avid collector of maps of Delaware and the surrounding region. The Pearl Herlihy Daniel map collection papers contain her correspondence with map dealers, other map collectors, and scholars as well as the catalogs she created to organize her collection. They also document Daniels’s research interests. Daniels lectured on both the early cartography of the Delaware region and on map collecting as a hobby. Her papers include her research notes, clippings from newspapers and magazines, manuscripts of her presentations and writings, and slides and copy photographs that she used in her talks and for publication.

Classics Illustrated published adaptations of the classics of literature in comic book format,[...] with the intention of introducing literature to younger readers. The bulk of the collection comprises 79 issues from the original Classics Illustrated series, which was created by Albert Lewis Kanter and published by Gilberton Company from 1941 to 1971. There are also: 22 issues from the Classics Illustrated Junior Series, which adapted fairy tales and fables for a younger audience from 1953 to 1969; three issues of First Comics’s version of Classics Illustrated, which published entirely new adaptations of classic literature from 1990 to 1991; and 48 issues of Acclaim Books’ Classics Illustrated Study Guides, which reprinted issues from the original Classics Illustrated series in a study guide format similar to CliffsNotes from 1996-1998.
