George F. Kettell correspondence
Scope and Content Note
This collection of correspondence consists of photocopies of the letters from the Reverend George F. Kettell to his daughters, Mrs. Caroline (Carrie) Budd and Mrs. Catherine (Katie) Biddle. The Reverend Kettell wrote these letters while he was serving as the U. S. Consul to the Grand Duchy of Baden in Karlsruhe, Germany from 1866-1869. His detailed letters describe his health, his functions as U. S. Consul, the local German community, and as well as other information.

Biographical Note
Dr. Kettell was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 18, 1817. From 1929 to 1934 he lived in Germany with his parent. The family returned to live in Danbury, Connecticut where Kettell studied for the ministry. By the age of 21 Reverend Kettell was serving as an itinerant Methodist clergyman. After serving as the U. S. Consul for three years, he returned to Brooklyn and served as pastor in several congregations. At the time of his death in 1883, Reverend Kettell was serving in the fourth year of his tenure as Presiding Elder of the New York District.
