Old College, Main Gallery

Old College, West Gallery
The University Gallery – now the Museums – was established in 1977 and opened its doors in Old College in the spring of 1978. The founding of the University Gallery coincided with a major collection donated by artist, collector, and philanthropist Helen Farr Sloan. The University Gallery also brought together existing collections from various locations and units at UD.
Within Old College, there are two gallery spaces, the large and grand Main Gallery in the center of the building on the second floor, and the smaller, more intimate West Gallery accessed through the Main Gallery.
Old College is one of the oldest buildings on campus, built in 1834, and like the nearby Mechanical Hall, is on the National Register of Historic Places. In the early years, the building comprised the entire university – there were classrooms, an oratory, offices, and dorm rooms where students lived. The spaces in the building have been repurposed many times over the decades – the Main Gallery was once a dining room, and the West Gallery was once the adjoining kitchen. The Museums also has storage space and a study room, Room 201, in Old College. The formal second floor lobby, next to the vestibule for the Main Gallery, is the site of many programs and receptions hosted by the Museums.
