New This Year: Examining Two Digital Collections on Improved Platform
By David Cardillo and Theresa Hessey, Digital Collections and Preservation
The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press is ringing in the new year with exciting news: we’ve migrated our digital collections to a new platform, AM Quartex! This dynamic platform enhances how we showcase our collections and improves access to our digitized materials, ensuring a richer and more engaging experience for researchers, students and history enthusiasts alike.
We’re thrilled to launch this new platform with 18 collections migrated from JSTOR and two brand-new digital collections. Both new collections were made possible thanks to the generosity and dedication of the Friends of the UD Library. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s now available.
Spotlight on Two New Collections:
1. Patriotic Order of the Sons of America Collection
This fascinating collection features letters and documents exchanged between the Sons of America in Philadelphia and the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America in Delaware.
One highlight is a document outlining the organization’s goals and commemorating Frederick E. Stees, a long-time member and Secretary of the national organization. Stees’ dedication to patriotic service is an inspiring reminder of the organization’s historical significance.

2. Delaware Desegregation Collection
A larger, more comprehensive collection delves into the history of desegregation efforts in Delaware, while also touching on national movements in education and civil rights. One captivating item, (1979), discusses efforts to enrich educational programming, including the beloved Schoolhouse Rock series.

Another standout is an article, Getting the Facts Straight About the Effects of School Desegregation, which addresses misconceptions about busing and racial integration with rigorously collected data.

Busing was a hot educational, as well as sociopolitical, issue of the 1970s and 1980s (and 1990s in Delaware). Via Getting the facts straight about the effects of school desegregation, Willis D. Hawley, Educational Leadership, ND.
These materials provide valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of desegregation, both locally and nationally, highlighting the enduring relevance of these efforts.
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning! Over the coming months, additional collections will be migrated and featured in this blog series. Stay tuned as we continue to share stories that connect us to our shared history and inspire future exploration.
