    Newark Nite Returns!

By David Cardillo, Digital Collections and Preservation

Some people use Memorial Day to mark the start of summer, even though the Summer Solstice officially arrives on June 21. But for many local Newark residents, Newark Nite has long been the true signal that summer has begun.

After an eight-year hiatus, Newark Nite is returning in its full form.

The beloved event began 40 years ago in 1986, when University of Delaware professor Dr. Jeff Miller partnered with the City of Newark to help revitalize the downtown area. The first Newark Nite, held on Saturday, June 7, 1986, was an immediate success and became an annual event, although the Newark Post article on June 11th indicated an uncertain future for the event.

A newspaper clipping features three black-and-white photographs of people enjoying the "Newark Nite" festival on Main Street, including a family walking together and a street performer entertaining onlookers. The left side contains an accompanying article about the event's success, while the bottom right corner displays a large advertisement for M&M Dry Cleaners with two promotional coupons.

Twenty years ago, Newark Nite drew crowds approaching 30,000 people. The event featured vendors, nonprofit booths, live demonstrations ranging from dance to martial arts, live music, and a dedicated children’s area filled with activities for families.

A newspaper clipping from the Newark Post, titled "Fun free for all at Newark Nite 2006," details the upcoming street festival's schedule, musical performances, and activities like an auto show and a children's area. The page includes an aerial photograph showing a large crowd of attendees packing Main Street, alongside local business advertisements in the bottom left corner.

A newspaper clipping from the Newark Post, titled "Lots of music, lots of styles at Newark Nite," highlights various musical acts scheduled for the 2006 event, including the Diamond State Chorus, Cole Younger Band, and Swing Samba Soul. The page includes a photograph of the trio Swing Samba Soul alongside an advertisement for State Farm insurance agent Rich Ulbrich.

The celebration stretched the length of Main Street and even spilled onto side streets between Main Street and Delaware Avenue. You know an event is big when it requires a map!

A newspaper clipping from the Newark Post features a black-and-white event map for "Newark Nite 2006," showing the layout of Main Street and various designated event zones such as stages, rides, and a children's area. Below the map, explanatory text details event times, street closures, children's activities at the Newark Shopping Center, and a rain-date schedule.

Unfortunately, following criminal activity that occurred after the 2010 event, concerns grew that Newark Nite was attracting an unwanted element. In response, the event was rebranded into a daytime festival called Newark Day. However, the new format created challenges, as local businesses now found themselves competing directly with outside vendors.

In 2014, there was another rebranding where the event was restricted to Downtown Newark businesses and called New Night Downtown.

The below article from Newark Post, June 10, 2016 shows that there were still events and activities for children. However, despite some relaxing of participant rules from 2014, the event did not draw nearly the number of people that Newark Nite brought to Main Street.

A newspaper clipping from the Newark Post features a photograph of a young boy throwing a ring at a ring toss game during a festival. The surrounding article text details the upcoming "A New Night Downtown" festival, including parking information and an entertainment schedule for three different stages.

New Night Downtown was canceled in 2018 due to planned Main Street repaving, although the road construction itself did not begin until the following year. Then came the COVID-19 shutdown, and no similar event has been held since June 2017.

In March, Newark Post reported that the City Council approved $15,000 to Parks and Recreation to bring back Newark Nite. It is scheduled for Friday night, June 5, on Main Street between South Chapel Street and South College Avenue. Planners and coordinators are expecting, or hoping, for 8,000 to 10,000 people with the hopes that, if successful, crowd size will return to the approximate 30,000 people the event attracted during its peak years.

For many residents, Newark Nite was always more than just a street festival. It was a reason to gather with friends, try new foods, enjoy live entertainment, and take memorable — and sometimes silly — photos together. With its return, Newark once again has the chance to kick off summer the way many locals remember best.
