Tom Winder’s Famous Twenty Thousand Mile Ride
By David Cardillo, Digital Collections and Preservation
The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press is pleased to introduce a new digital collection featuring print materials from Special Collections. This expanding resource highlights materials that support teaching and research across the University. Collection strengths include fine, decorative and applied arts; history and Delawareana with emphasis on the Delmarva region and the Delaware Valley; the history and materiality of the book; horticulture; and the history of science and technology with concentrations in chemistry and engineering.
Digital Collections and Preservation regularly digitizes Special Collections materials requested by other libraries and also proactively scans volumes that enhance our existing digital collections. As a result, expect this collection to continue to grow much like our Trade Catalog and Seed Catalog collections.
One item of note now available is Tom Winder’s Famous Twenty Thousand Mile Ride, an abbreviated title published in 1895. The publisher’s note offers a vivid summary of Winder’s remarkable journey.

Tom Winder
The publisher’s note has a rather good summary of Mr. Winder’s trip.

Excerpt, page 4.

The route around the continental United States.

The man. The machine. The look of determination and perseverance.
This is but one sample of the digitized titles from Special Collections now available on our Quartex platform. Expect to see more as both previously scanned items and newly scanned items make their way into this collection, some of which will no doubt serve as excellent material for future blogs.
