About this Event
Scientific analysis is an important tool to help identify whether art, antiques and collectibles are genuine or fake. Though scientific testing alone cannot prove authenticity, it often can disprove it by positively identifying materials as inconsistent with a purposed date of manufacture, method of manufacture, or known working methods of an artist or craftsman.
Join Catherine Matsen, conservation scientist, to explore case studies that highlight how materials analysis provides a more informed understanding of a work of art.
Catherine Matsen has worked as a conservation scientist at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library’s Scientific Research and Analysis Laboratory (SRAL) for 15 years. She has undertaken analysis on all types of decorative arts in the museum collection.
