About this Event
Artist Phoebe Beasley will share insights into her artistic practice and work in collage during this virtual event, which is held in conjunction with the exhibition Gathered Together: Black Artists and the Collage Aesthetic, on view in Mechanical Hall Gallery.
Beasley will also delve into how she recently elaborated upon and augmented artworks from the Sunrise is Coming After While project (1998), a compilation of six poems by Langston Hughes that were selected by Maya Angelou and each illustrated with a screen print by Beasley. On view in the exhibition, you will find three prints from that series, as well as the reimagined version of Mother to Son.
The medium of collage offers artists an inventive means of constructing a work of art, often incorporating everyday materials and found objects, such as newspapers, photographs and fabric. Gathered Together: Black Artists and the Collage Aesthetic explores the practice and visual strategies of collage, highlighting the University’s collection of African American art.
This virtual event is free and open to the public.
Registration is required. Once registered, you will receive an email with details on how to join the event via Zoom.
