In this badge program, participants will receive the Research Data Management badge by completing data management workshops and demonstrating competency with research data management best practices. Participants will learn basic strategies for research data management throughout the research lifecycle. This approach will provide a whole-project perspective for research data management, which will prepare participants to craft data management plans at the beginning of a project rather than trying to design pieces throughout the project’s lifespan. Participants will also learn to apply the FAIR principles for data sharing to ensure their shared data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Application of the FAIR principles will help participants understand the importance of metadata, documentation, open file formats, and comprehensibility when sharing their research data. Finally, participants will learn how to write a data management plan using the DMPTool. This will allow them to take the next step and apply materials and concepts from the program toward their own success.
Requirements
- Attend the Basics of Research Data Management workshop or watch the recording and complete the corresponding Canvas quiz
- Attend one additional workshop from the following options:
- Complete the self-paced Canvas course
- Complete one of the following final projects with your own data or library-provided data
- Write a data management plan for your own personal project using the DMPTool
- Prepare a dataset for sharing using best practices for metadata and documentation
- Clean a messy dataset using best practices for data cleaning
Total time commitment
Approximately 4.5 hrs
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- learn strategies for basic data management including file naming, versioning, metadata and documentation, storage and preservation, and data sharing
- apply the FAIR principles for data sharing to datasets and understand the justification for good data sharing practices
- write a data management plan using the DMPTool to learn best practices for developing a plan, to apply materials and concepts from the program toward their own success, and to coordinate and leverage resources available at UD.
Registration
Register by Sept 30th in order to complete the badge during Fall 2024. If you register after that date, you may need to complete some of the workshops during Spring 2025.
